Vioi.rr.—You say in your story: “That was her rule, and she cUuld not break It.” So it is with nil erliterV mt souse or experience. They huve n rule not ta-pv-WiHli stories, wllhouttbcy know who the author is. Gkekmiack.—Yes; Air. Boroughs wns twice elected treasurer of Ji>s|>er county by the republicans, un<l held the oilice nt a time when it was thought to l>e comfortably remunerative—when times were tliish unit the foes were probably ns much as the emoluments are now. If not considerably more. It, is nlso Into that Inst fa 11, after the Ititmo of nearly eight years since his term of oluee expired, ho illod his claim against the county for an additional amount, and pocketed a cool shoo. Possibly tins is not a ease exactly parallel with tile infamous congressional salary grab Umttlie lion. Daniel W. Voorhees participated in; but it is difficult for tdaia and unsopliistieateti'pcople to understaud >y what system of logic lie make* ids present denunciations of the repaid lean party for ita extravagance, and loud <l«n<auds for t.ic nxiuetiou of the salaries of public officers, appear consistent with the recruit he made while a republican and a county otficer, The last sum of ♦BOO which Mr. Boroughs got out of the treasury of Jasper county—winch he took from the scant oarnings of a tax-burdened, toil-worn and impoverished people—was not a beak-pay grub, perhaps; but it stands in the way Iwforehlm, M the angel with a darning sword is decrlbed to have stood before Baalim’s ass. and he will probably talk more industriously t'aais.for the past week or two before he succeeds in beari ng tlie Confederate democracy of Jasper coan ty into power. Greenbacks are at par with gold in Chicago and Cincinnati this week, the banking houses paying out gold and greenbacks Indiscriminately to their customers, and the National banks redeeming their own issue with gold coins, silver coins, or greenbacks at the holders’ option. The price of wheat has advanced to a good round figure, aud that of other grains will follow correspondingly. Dry goods, clothing, sugar, coffee, tea and other staple articles of personal consumption are cheaper than at any previous time in fifteen years. The prospect for an immense crop of wheat aud of every species of fruit known to the zone was never better in America. Neither a milder winter nor an earlier spring was ever known in this region, hence work-teams and all kinds of live stock are iu good condition for labor and to increase during the summer. There is peace, and respect for the laws, throughout this land. Forthespecial benefit of the inhabitants of Jasper county whom misfortune may settle a mortgage upon the board of commissioners have decided to build a large and comfortable asylum thisapproaching summer. For all these, and for sundry and divers other equally cogent reasons, just enough republicans should unite with the independent greenback party to elect the full democratic ticket in Jasper county next October. Then the millennium would be double discounted for glory.
Somehow it happened that the only township trustee who was not prepared to make settlement with the board of county commissioners last week is a democrat, and lives in a democratic township. His bill was there all the same, but his vouchers were reported strayed or stolen—no other marks or brands perceivable. The only thing remarkable about this trifling circumstance in these times of strange events is the singular fact that the trustee is not a republican. Had he been a republican it would not, perhaps, have been necessary nearly a week afterwards to direct the auditor’s attention to his omission to enter upou the records of the board of commissioners their action in the matter. In Jasper county as in congress, two of the greatest aims of the Confederate democracy seem to be: 1. To make it appear that all republicans, dead or living, are thieves, liars and villains. 2. To bide the incompetency, neglect and misfortunes of members of their own party from public sight. '
New silver dollars of the coinage of 1878—huge disksy nearly as large as narrow gauge railroad car wheels — with the image of a thick-lipped, bang-haired, night-capped, female voluptuary on the obverse side, and a weary looking sea-gull on the reverse —have drifted into this inland commercial pocket. One of them, altho’ weighing only 412} grains Troy, will pay for the honest-money, anti-repu-diation, Independent Rensselaeb Union a whole blessed year. The Crawfordsville Review says the republicans of Montgomery county will nominate Wasson for auditor and Dwiggins for treasurer. They are both excellent men and well qualified to fill those positions if elected. We would regret exceedingly to have them move away, but if it must be so will endeavor to draw all possible consolation from the knowledge that Jasper county’s loss will be Montgomery’s gain. Bister Tilton has published a new confession of the original sin, and Brother Beecher declares her an innocent, crazy angel.
