THEnE aie one hundred thousand Germans in Texas. TnE Thousand Islands number only six hundred and odd. The Public Library of Boston now contains 314,265 volumes. The New York street cars carry 165,000,000 passengers a year. The run of salmon in the Penobscot this year is the largest it has been for twelve or fifteen years. TnERE are found to be nearly twenty thousand Freedman’s Bank depositors with balances of $5 or less. Expenditures on New York’s East River bridge thus far have been $7,468,646.66. The emigration to this country from Russia, last year, amounted to 5,959 individuals—nearly 3,000 more than the previous year. The chcap-cab movement has frightened the New York hack-owners, and they are voluntarily reducing their rates by about one-half. The number of paupers, exclusive of lunatics in asylums and vagrants, in London, on the last day of the first week in June, was 80,428 The State of Maine groans in the spirit and crieth out for Paris-green. The po-tato-bug is upon her, and 20,000,000 of the fooc he loveth are at stake. It is calculated that abcut 30,000 men come into the City of London every morning for business purposes, and leave in the afternoon or evening. The official canvass shows that the Prohibition candidate for Governor in New Hampshire received 350 votes in a total of 77,870. The New Hampshire State Prison has only 160 convicts, and the year just closed cleared above all expenses the sum of SB,OOO. A cave about 300 feet long, six or seven high, and nearly as many wide, has been discovered in the solid rock at Taughanic Ravine; near Cayuga Lake, New York. The revised estimates of German statisticians name the following cities, exclusive of New York, as having one, or more than one, million inhabitants: Lon.don, 3,480,428; Paris, 1,851,792; Constantinople, 1,075,000; Berlin, 1,045,000; Canton, 1,000,000; Vienna, 1,001,999; Seangtan, Shanchowfu and Singafu, in China, 1,000,000 each. If New York and surroundings be considered one city—as they virtually are—they will rank in size next after Paris. * The investigation into the losses of sheep during the past year shows that a total of nearly 8,000,000 sheep and lambs were destroyed by dogs and wolves and various diseases, and the aggregate money value was nearly $8,000,000. The average percentage of loss was nearly eight. The rate is the highest respectively in North Carolina, Florida and Louisiana, and ranges from 17 percent, in the former State to 3 7-10 in Nebraska. The rate is highest in the South and lowest in States having dog laws. Hot-water Molasses-Caee.— Put one half-cup of lard in an earthem bowl and two cups of molasses. Pour in one cup of hot water, and set on the back of the range until the lard is dissolved. When cool, stir in two tablespoonfuls of ginger and a teaspoonful of salt. Dissolve one teaspoonful of soda in hot water, or sift two teaspoonfuls of sea-foam through two cups of flour. The batter should be quite soit, but as cups vanr in size, judgment must be used as to the quantity of flour. Bake in a quick oven and eat hot. This is nice for lunch with chocolate.
