JJnder this atun ning caption tlie article begins thatHit R#an(«g Board Aoddan*/, Bather* ford B. Hnyaa, daataaa for rata u> the people la the following portfea of hie iiaa* gurnl edireeo: Here two paragraphs pertaining to the inaaeUl question are quoted from the inaugural address, and then he oritleisee thus: HU Aeeideeop ia laboring nndar a mistake as to the eauaa that has Wrodaoad the dieireM aa<f prostration. “The irredeemable paper" is inaeoeat of the charge. Now, my dear Big Editor, if yon will read those paragraphs, and, if possible* exereise a little common sense, you will see that President Hayes does not even hint that the said irredeemable paper produeed the distress and prostration, but these are his exact words: In sty lodgment the feeling of uncertainty inseparable from an Irredeemable paper currency, with its fluctuations in value, is one es the greatest obstacles of a return to prosperous ttmaa.
There ia oertainly a great difference between saying that irredeemable paper produces a certain state of affairs and saying that it is an obstacle to a return to a different condition. I now give another stunning paragraph: One thing he oaa be sure of from the policy la force of Contraetioa and shrinkage of Values by the utter and universal bankruptcy of the whole people. This sentence has several remarkable features. A noticeable one is the absence of any sense whatever. It is impossible to lorm an idea of what it means. It is a long string of that the Big Editor has written so often that his pen or penoil sticks the n into every article mechanically, from mere force of habit It >» as destitute of punctuation ps a deaert is of trees, and quite as wanting el* sense or meaning as of punctuation points. But the next sentence is a little eloarer: HU adtaloietration is destined under such policy to be the most disastrous to the nation, add will make his prom'ue of a single term f consist y. There Uno propriety in excusing* falsehood in such a chief servant as jlW' Hayes, and we will net excuse him in uttering the following: “The eniy safe paper currency is one which rests upon the gold basis, and at all times and promptly eenvertible into coin." So yon wont excuse him, eh? Well, that’s hadj It’s rough on the President! It was a grave oversight or President Hayes that lie did not enclose that sentence in parenthesis and meekly aak the Big Editor to exouse him for speaking it. It was very rash of him to deliver an inaugural speech at all without first having sought and obtained the approval of the mighty intellect which governs the Sets and —the stale senator from Jasper county, and who not only sternly refuses to excuse him but actually goes ou in another paragraph of withering sarcasm that closes with this terrible prophecy: Poor alavef Hu administration will end iu the execrations of the utilbous if he continues in the policy of. the heathens. He may possibly change and be a Christian ; if so he may be blessed.
Here the Big Editor no doubt looked fondly at his tine gold-head-ed oane, smiled complacently, and was happy in the thought that of the entire editorial fraternity he alone was able in a few sentences to annihilate a President aud his inaugural address. “ There are several sentences in the article under review that X have not taken the trouble to notice. A prominent peculiarity of the artiela is the keen entire that abounds in every line and evept out in suoti pbraaea as *»l|is Ketumiug Board Acoidenov.*' During the career of Mr. Johnson as accidental president “His Aecidenoy H was a popur Jar title, and it mast he a master stroke of a powerful mind to apply the term to President Hayes. He said it was "coin,” and did not so much as even use tbs word gold in his whole speech. Tbs Sum understands the difference between the terms as they are need in the dissuasion of American finances, and its misquotation was purposely made to deoeive its readers.—EmTon Union.]
