Wouldn’t Retrieve,
A gentleman doing business on the upper portion of Jay street has a fine dog, which has been so well trained that he appears to understand nearly everything his master says to him, and as a retriever he can scarcely be beaten. If his master is at a distance from home he can send the dog back for any article with the name of which be Is familiar, and he will bring it back if it is within reach. A few days ago the gentleman was at his store with the dog, when a friend dropped in and presently inquired: , *■ “ Holloa! is that your dog? Is he good for anything?” “Is he good for anything?” was the indignant response. “Good for anything? I should say so. Wait till I show you boor he retrieves.” Not having anything else handy he took out his purse, containing about ten dollars, tied it up carefully, and concealed it behind some squashes that were upon the sidewalk. The dog was then told to “ find my purse,” and commenced bout ing briskly, closely watched by the gen tlemen present. For some time be pros pec ted in an opposite direction from that in which the poise was concealed, but finally worked that way and passed the spot two or three tunes. His owner oouldn’t understand such conduct on the part of the canine, and didn’t relish the “ chaffing” of his friends on tha subject either; but concluding to try it again, went after the purse himself, but behold! it was gone. A small boy who stood near, on ascertaining what the search was being made for, ejaculated: “ That most have been what the lady picked up a few minutes ago.” The proprietor of the purse baa concluded to practice his dog on something else hereafter. —Sacramento Record- Union.
