Local Gossip.

Potatoes are retailing from the groceries for 60 cents a bushel. The best brands of calico are to be found at P. J. Sears & Co.’s. Call at F. J. Sears & Co.’s and Corn, though not a full crop this season in Jasper county, is excellent in quality, being sound, hard and fully matured. Perfectly handsome are those winter shawls at jF. J. Sears &> Co.’s. Call and see them, ladies, before purchasing elsewhere. After voting on next Tuesday it is the design of Mr. A. Leopold to start away to purchase his stock of fall and winter goods. What few patches of winter wheat were sown in Jasper county this season look very fine. It has made a splendid growth thus far. Apples are so plenty in this county that hundreds of bushels are rotting upon the ground. In Rensselaer, they sell fbr 20 to 30 cents a bushel at the stores, and yet the market is not always supplied. Messrs. Meyers & Haley have moved their shoe shop jnto the room recently occupied by M. V. B. Warner, and Jacob Eiglesbach is fitting up the room they have in st vacated to be used by him for bi* meat shop. One of the most subcessfnl salesmen that was ever in Rensselaer is Mr. William Doerle. Ils is always in good humor, always accommodating, always attentive to patrona, always look* put for the interest of bis employer. Mr. Leopold is to be congratulated upon having him again in bis employ. On the day of the republican rally at thifrplaoe (September 27th) Mr. Harvey W. Wood lost a highlyprized setter pup. Its color is nearly all white. It* ears are light brown or liver-color, and on one shoulder is a spot of the same color. Th* pup is about seven months old. Mr. Wood (county recorder) will pay a reasonable reward for bis return. Among other interesting topics to be discussed at the Battle Ground district conference to be held at tbisplace next week, oommeuoing on Wednesday,is “Oamp Meeting, by Rev. D. H. Hull, and “Should the district of the annual conference be enlarged ?*’ by W. W. Barnard. The programme of exercises promises' an interesting time and the attendance will undoubtedly be very large. Hayes and Wheeler are as sure to be elected next month as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and just so sure are F. J. Two years ago the democratic candidate for Congress was elected by 2,100 majority, in a poll of about 13,000 votes. Her three electoral votes will be given to Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler. Hurrah for n good beginning 1 Not a republican ticket has yet been printed for use in Jasper county; not one will be printed before to-morrow (Friday) noon; all tickets purporting to be republican, that have been circulated, or are now in the bands of parties in this county, are spurious. They are frauds put out with intent to deceive.
