Mr. Zimri Dwiggins and wife have returned from a visit to Philadelphia, and the centennial exposition.
Messrs. S. P. Howard and S. P. Thompson lett on Tuesday evening on a trip to Lebanon, Ohio, and vicinity. This market is tolerably well supplied with native grown muskmelons. Uncle Sammy Lockridge, one of the best masons ever in this county, is building a new brick oven for R. F. Goddard’s bakery. Mr. Harvey W. Wood, county recoribr, started on yesterday morning to visit the centennial exposition at Philadelphia. Have you seen those fine cashmeres at F. J. Sears & Co.’s? If not it will pay you to give them a look before buying any where else. Groceries, cheaper than ever before, at wholesale or retail, at U. C. Starr’s popular stand. All persons are forbidden to hunt or shoot on the land, especially in the cultivated fields, of the Catholic Orphan Asylum, under penalty of prosecution at law. Elsewhere appears a call for a meeting of the stockholders of the Indianapolis, Delphi &, Chicago railroad, for the purpose of electing a board of directors and officers. While assisting m unloading our new job press Tuesday evening Mr. Ludd Hopkins had the flesh on one of his hands badly jammed, and we regret to learn that It has since become so sore that he has to keep it bandaged for a few days. One thousand dbllars’ 1 worth of new presses, types and other material for the job printing business is now being received at this office. In a few days we will be prepared to do ordinary work in this line in as good style and cheaper than city offices. There is a much better feeling among farmers in regard to crops in this neighborhood than there was three weeks ago. Fields and patcheq of corn that had been regarded as total failures have come out rapidly and now promise to make tolerably fair crops. Fail not to attend the meeting of the Hayes and Wheeler club, Saturday evening, August 19th. Addresses will be made by M. F. Chilcote and M. L. Spiller. Groceries, flour and provisions at Charley Platt’s cheaper than ever. 'flie “Clippers” have a very neat and tasty base ball uniform, abd< the boys look quite “toney” in their new suits.
Charley Starr always keeps a large assortment of choice candies, and sells them so cheap that everybody can afford to buy. The second game of base ball between the Rensselaer Juniors and the Morocco boys will be played in this place next Saturday. Charley Starr’s largely increasing trade is due to the fact that he keeps standard goods and sells them at a very small margin of profit. Thanks are returned the gentlemen who so kindly assisted in unloading our new press and placing it in position on Tuesday evening. It is rumored that a match game of base ball will soon be played in this place between the Rensselaer “Clippers” and a Remington club. Rev. J. B. Crowe, of Remington, will preach in the Presbyterian church on the 27th (week from next Sunday) at 10:30 a m., and also in the evening.
Customers are always treated with kindness by C. C. Starr and his gentlemanly clerks. This is the reason people like to trade at his popular grocery store. Miss Jennie Yeoman, daughter of Eli Yeoman, Esq., died last week in Minnesota where she had gone to regain her health. She was among the best young women of the county.
Mr. John Coen, proprietor of the Rensselaer nursery, announces a good stock of fine trees for the fall trade. The report recently put in circulation that all the best varieties and all good trees had been disposed of is an error, as any person will be convinced who takes the trouble to call on him.
Johnny Lamborn, independent candidate for sheriff, was in town yesterday. He thinks there is no good reason why he should not be elected; but there is occasionally a slip betwixt the cup and lip, espe ciaily in political matters.' Johnny has a very fair prospect of tarrying at Jerico until his beard be grown.
On the first page of this paper will be found the announcement of the holding of the annual teachers’ institute of Jasper county, during the week of September 18th to 23d. This is an error on our part. It should read to commence on the 11th of September and close on the 16th. The Rensselaer public schools will open on the 18tb.
Col. Will Cumback will be at Rensselaer with Gen. Judson Kilpatrick on the 25th instant, (week from Friday) to assist in the grand rally of republicans. These gentlemen rank among the ablest and most fascinating public speakers of this nation, and it is anticipated there will be a large attendance of people from adjoining counties to listen to them.
Mr. Cyrus A. The editorial room, business office and job work department of Thb Union establishment has been moved down stairs into the room one door below J. H. Wood’s hardware store, where visitors will be welcomed. Having recently made extensive additions to our job office we are prepared to do all kinds of work in our line at reasonable prices and in very neat manner. All kinds of printing, including pamphlet work, blank work, bill* heads, note-heads, letter-heads, business, visiting and address cards, sale bills, programmes, campaign posters, and the like, done with , divpatch.
