Mr. Wolcott.
Hon. Aaeoa Wolcott, oaa didst* of the independent* for Governor, was ia town yesterday. He will speak at Lation to-morrow. A pleasant interview with him developed tbe ftgt that the independents entertain strong hopes es carrying this Bute. Johnson, Benton and several other counties am claimed for them; and they express a hope of winning She field by a thorough sad energetio canvass. The national committee will furnish ten prominent speakers, and supply the necessary documents. Mr. Woloott claims, it we understood him correctly, to be tbe original mover of the currency reform, paving first developed the idem -ha now advocates as early as 1866. Hi* ideas are embodied in a report made by him, wbieb can be found in the indites Senate Report of that year. He stats* that there is a vast amount of ignorance oppa the financial question; that tbe views of tbe independents are grettly nrjsanderstood, sod that whan tbe people 'Well understand tbs advantages of a gteephtek currency, aad its interconverttbifity witb.gnvernment bonds bearing 3.66 *sU interest, they will embntoe bis financial r*for® theories with great neahimity. Of this be ie very muguihe; * much eo that be freely advances the opinion that ao honest, proper presentation of the subject to any logical mind will Inaura conversion. He says that the exclusive gold and silver tender provided for in the constitution is misunderstood, and that no amendment of that frwtrwment is neoeasary to tbe legislative adoption of bis views fie also believes that tbe opinions of Daniel Webster, of Judge Storey, and tbe Supreme Bench sustain him in tbe opinion that such a currency comes within tbs scops of the constitution. When asked what tbe basis of that currency won}d be after the bstiooal debt should Ifave bean paid, be replied,.as we nodeiitetod him, that it was oot contemplated that the government should evm be.owt.uf deft. it should ahrays bavs an issue 3.65 gold interest interconvertible bonds as basis fsr currency sufficient for the wants of trade, and to this extent a national debt weald be asatkmal blearing. Equally inapplicable, he thought, Mis ti»e reference to the French assignats, and all other forms of paper currency that had beoome worthless on thorough trial. To generalise his views, as we understood them, his theory is a paper currency exclusively based on government credit, interconvertible with government of 3.65 gold bonds, and uncollectable bylaw, but irredeemable in gold and silver, except as to bond iaterest—this isdestiaad ultimately to be the universal mousy of tbe world. Tbe-theory did not strike us se being very practicable—hardly plausible —but tbe Governor expressed hie confidence ip being able to convert tu to his views whenever tbe opportunity for an hour or two’s effort sbould present. Governor WolooU is probably one of tbe best posted advocates-of -thia greenback currency reform ia the West. He expresses bis views very clearly, and has very sanguine and nndoubting frith that they need only be known to be adopted. He thinks they will command votes enough to throw the presidential election into the House, where the green backers have the majority. Nona verrom. Should the Governor favor our citisena with a speech during the campaign, we can assure them that they wifi find him a very able and pleasant speaker, however much they may consider him visionary in bis financial theories Michigan City Enterprise.
Hen<!ergon end Neff, now in Washington, represent, on the authority of Governor Hendricks, that if the demoemte will repeal the resumption act the independent ticket in this State will he withdrawn ip favor of the deaocmey— Jndianapoiu Journal. Henderson, Neff and Hendrieks have as much authority to speak for the independents aji Sitting Bull has to preaoh the gospel. The independent ticket will not be withdrawn in any case. As we have said before, if the democratic party should adopt the independent platform verbatim and nominate the most notyd greenback democrat in the country, the independents would not support him. We have to confidence whatever w &&{&*!&£»& Sun. •/. * • ■.y '
