A Piute’s Fearful Fate.
This morning a Chronicle reporter’-ob-served a dejected PlutlS standing on the ctirb of South C streei, and (wonder of ’wonders!) holding in his- arms a baby!' The brave glanced uneasily about trim as' iif fearful that his degradation would be> observed, and seemed to take anything but kindly to his charge. Presently two ‘squaws emerged from the house behind him, each carrying a pappoose on her back, and the three waddled off down the I middle of the street. The reporter shortly afterward had the honor of shaking 'hands with Capt Bob, the Piule swell, iriisplendeiit in a green blanket and a plug Ihht, and sought a solution of the baby !puzzle. The Captain smiled several inth- ' es; and affably explained that the reporter Iliad witnessed one of the domestic penal- ; ties of the tribe. When twins are born ’ to a Piute who is not favored with grown'up daughters lie is by Piute law obliged ito take full charge of the superflousin(funt until it? is able to walk, when it re- ’ to tM care of the mother. The uhfortunate brave is thus subjected to a practical slavery of two years’ length, as he hugs the wickiup very closely, beirig in a chronic state or mortification and disgust. From the mahner in which the Captain chuckled and grunted during his explanation it would seem that the father of twins becomes th® butt of the wags of the tribe. “Two concluded Bob, as he gazed wistfully at the Worn coat of the reporter, “no good. He all much bad.’’— Virginia (Wet.) Chronicle, Gentian was our grandmothers' hobby for a tonic, and no bitter would be considered complete ■■ without it; hence it enters into nearly all. But experience has piored that it is injurious to the stomach if frequently used. A far better tonic is found in Guarana Bitters. j Buhnktt’s Cocoaine is the beet and cheapest hair-dressing in the world.
