Gillam Township Sabbath School Union.
The second meeting of the Gillam Township Sabbath School Union was held at Independence Chapel, June 27th, 1875, at 3 o’clock P. M. There were about 300 persons in attendance. The exercises were conducted by Mr. L. S. Mitchell. They consisted of singing, prayer, reports of secretaries, recitation of topics, texts and outlines of the lessons of previous month, and an interesting and apjwopriate address by Mr. James Comer. The secretary of Vernon school reported an enrollment of 65, with an average attendance of 44|. The secretary of Independence school reported 80 enrolled, and an average attendance of 55. The secretary of Gillam school reported 75 enrolled, and an average attendance of 56. Total enrollment for the township 220; average attendance 1551. At the close of the exercises several interesting and beneficial suggestions were offered by a number of the members and visitors. The people of Gillam township feel a deep interest in the Sabbath school work, and are endeavoring to advance the cause as rapidly as possible; and they hope soon to see the time when all who have reached the years of accountability will join in this glorious cause and help build up the walls of Zion. They cordially invite visitors from other townships to attend these meetings and feel free to lend them aid in this noble work. Our next meeting will be held at the same place (Independence Chapel) on Sabbath, July 25th, 1875, at 3 o’clock P. M., and the programme for that occasion is as follows: Manager—G. 8. Guild. 1. Music and prayer. 2. Recitation of topics, texts and outlines of the lesson for the month. 3. Reports of Secretaries. 4. Singing by Vernon school. 5. Concert declamation by a class of little boys from Vernon school.
6. Binging by Gillam school. 7. Concert declamation by a class of little girls from Gillam school. 8. Singing by Independence school. 9. Oration by Mr. T. M. Guild. 10. Essay by Miss Carrie McCullough. 11. General questions by Mr. William Stevens. 12. General suggestions by Mr. T. H. Robinson. 13. Closing song. • / June 28, 1875. J. R. Dwiggins and wife, and Alfred Thompson and wife, of Rensselaer; and Wm. Mills and wife, and Mrs. Shilvey and Mrs. ISichols, of Goodland, Newton connty, attended the recent meeting at Antioch. They are earnest, -working Christians, whom it is a pleasure to become acquainted with. —Plymouth Democrat.
