Rensselaer Union, Volume 7, Number 23, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 25 February 1875 — An Honest Honorable Man. [ARTICLE]
An Honest Honorable Man.
On the 10th inst, Hon. Jasper Packard by his attorneys, Messrs. Osborn & Calkins, filed his complaint in the Jasper Circuit Court against the editors of the*Rensselaer Union, Horace E. James and Joshua Healey, for “false and malicious libel,” and claiming damages in the sum of SIO,OOO. We regret to see brother quill drivers getting into law suits, but the charge is such that Gen. Packard is driven to the course he has taken in order to vindicate himself. As the Union men had no means of knowing what they assert, the article bears malice upon its face. We believe Gen. Packard to be an honest man, above corruption, anil aside trom the back pay feature, we never £iad a more honest and faithful Representative in Con-' gross. And while we have condemned this [we only refer to the back pay] we have always believed that Mr. Packard voted for it because he thought it just, and*not because he was dishonest. Differing with him, however, we haye been magnanimous enough to accord to him the purest motives in his action, and when he is charged with selling his vote and influence in favor of any job, we must beg respectfully to say that we do not believe a word of it. He is anghonest honorable man, and the suit at law should punish severely those who would so shamefully traduce liis fair name. —Kent land Gazette. The libel suit of Jasper Packard against the Rensselaer Union is the cheapest kind of an advertising dodge.— Valparaiso Messenger.
