A thunder storm was among the incidents of Tuesday night. Fendig has a splendid stock of new goods, which he is selling very cheap. Live turkeys have been sold for seven oents a pound in Rensselaer, this week. t" ~, ,l_ For fresh drugs and pure medicines go to Harding & Willey’s drug store. Ludd Hopkins has tne best stock of women’s and children’s shoes in this market, for a fact. Go to Charley Starr for family groceries- 4 —in the “Shanghai Building,” first door below the postoffice. If there is anything in the mercantile line that you are m want of and desire to buy cheap, call at Leopold’s ‘‘Cheap Corner.” An infant son of James and Phebe Yeoman, of Newton township, died on the 17th instant, aged about four weeks. No joke about this, j The enrollment of school number 2, Newton township, for the month ending February 17, 1875, was 43, the average daily attendance was 35.3. Among the most attractive institutions ot Rensselaer isDr. Kelley’s dental and photograph gallery, up stairs in Mrs. Hemphills new brick building. He is,-ready to pull your /teeth if you frown, or take your picture when you smile, and both in the very best styleMr. C. H. Price, clerk elect of Jasper county, is attending court this week and familiarizing himself with the duties of the office into which he will be inducted one year from next May Charley was elected on the Independent ticket, and is nervous for fear the legislature will not cut off any of the emoluments of the office before he gets possession,of it.
People who desire to obtain meadow or pasture lands during the coming season, can make arrangements to that effect, on reasonable terms, with Messrs. Thompson «fc Bro., who are agents for large and valuable tracts in Jasper county. Their clients object to having any more timber taken from their possessions without permission. All whom this notice affects will take due and timely notice, and be governed accordingly. Because it meets with such universal favor among the people who use it every day in their houses the Weed sewing machine is justly entitled to be called the “family favorite.” It is a first class machine in every respect, and is Admirably adapted to family use. Mr. C. W. Clifton is agent for this machine at Rensselaer, of whom it may be procured as cheap and on as favorable terms as from the manufacturers. He also has for sale oil, needles and attachments for any machine in the market, and is a gentleman to trade with.
A marked change came over the weather daring the past few days. The temperature has raised from 10 degrees below zero to 45 and 50 degrees above. Rain commenced falling Monday and continued until the snow, which had covered the ground from 10 inches to 2 feet in depth, has jjretty much all disappeared. There is a good deal of water on the surface of the ground, very much to the relief of people who had many cattle and other stock to caie for. The ground is frozen to tfce depth of 18 inches 2 feet, and in exposed places deeper. Taken all around the present winter no far has been of unusual severity. , *
It is all a mistake ’about any establishment either in or out of Jasper county doing plain job print, ing cheaper or better than it is done at the Union office. All kinds of plain poster work, such as dodgers, 6how-bills, programmes for festivals and concerts, horse-bills, salebills and the like printed on good, clean paper, with the very best ink, and “set up” by workmen who understand their business. We have one of the largest and best job printing offices in the State, outside ot the cities—in fact at least three times the quantity of material that is usually found in country offices. Letter heads, billheads, statements, circulars, ball invitations, official blanks, business cards, envelopes, attorney’s briefs, <fcc., <fcc., printed in good, workman-like manner, at the lowest living prices. Call and see James & Healey when you want neat job work done at fair prices.
