Senate, Jan. 7.—The Senate organized by the election of John Overmeyer, Secretary; W. 11. Smith Assistant Secretary, and E. H. Menifee Doorkeeper, the vote standing 27 to 23 on each ballot, the Independents voting with the Republicans... .Bills were introduced —to reduce the per diem of members; to fix the salary of the Governor at $5,000; to repeal the Baxter, law; to fix the time of appraisement of real estate once in six years; to inaugurate a warehouse system, and making Yvarehouse receipts negotiable... .A bill to fix the pay of members at $3 per day Yvas read a second time and referred to a special committee. . House.—The House organized by the election of Dai'id Turpie, of Marion, for Speaker; S. W. Holmes, of Jackson, for Clerk, and Moses T. Lewan, of Putnam, for Doorkeeper, they receiving 56 votes... .Bills were introduced—to fix the pay of members; to fix the Goi'ernor’s salary; to repeal the Baxter law... .The committee appointed to ivait on the Governor reported that he would deliver his message at 10 o’clock on the 8th.... Adjourned. Senate, Jan. B.—The Senate met at ten o’clock... .A resolution was adopted providing for a committee to report one bill reducing and fixing all salaries, including the pay of members, the salary of the Governor, etc., and that all bills and resolutions on this subject be referred to such committee.... At 10:20 the Senate proceeded to the hall of the House to hear the Governor’s message.... Returning, the Senate adjourned until Monday at two p. m. House. —A resolution indorsing the Speaker’s address was adopted unanimously .... -A bill wqg, introduced for compulsory attendance upon public schools....
