Purcupile & Co.’s. Commercial agents for packing houses are paying 83.50 to $3.70 per cwt., gross, this week for swine delivered at Remington. J. I. Purcupile & Co. have ladies’ fine shoes at greatly reduced rates, for cash only. The Auditor gives notice in another column of this paper that on the sth day of January next the board of commissioners of Jasper -county will hear proposals for leasing the Jasper county Poor Farm, and taking care of the paupers.

Two divorces were granted by Judge Hammond during the term of the Jasper circuit court, which has just closed. One decree released Matilda Spencer from an odious alliance with Charles 11. Spencer; the other dissolved the marriage relations of Frank J. and Amanda Purcupile.

A report reaches us that Hon. "Lycurgus Rawles died at Indianapolis last Monday. Mr. Rawles had /been* resident of Jasper county '■tor many years, and moved to Indi-.-anapolis with his family only a few weeks ago. At the ' last general election lie was elected a commissioner of this county without an opposing vote, but on account of bis removal did not qualify lor the (Seat.
Arrangements have been perfected by which we can furnish the Weekly ■'State Journ ad and the Rensselaer Union together one year for $3. This ‘ offer will be good during the month •x»f December, 1873.

Jtadge Hammond will preside on the bench of the Cass county circuit court at Logansport, next week, having exchanged with Judge Chase, who will preside over a special session of the Newton circuit court at Kentland. We hope and expect that all persons owing our'firm wifi be prompt to come forward and settle up by the first day of January, 1874, ap on that day we shall positively give all unsettled accounts and notes to an agent for collection. Leopold & Fendig. In another column is to be found the Auditor’s circular in relation to refunding the tax collected to aid the building of the Continental railroad threugh Jasper county. Mr. Babcock promises to be as expeditious as possible and asks those to whom the money is to be paid to be patient while the necessary preliminaries are being perfected.

We are requested to publish that a festival will be given in thePresbytcrian Church Wedntsday evening, December 24th, 1873, (Christmas Eve), for the benefit of the Sabbath School children; to which everybody al'e invited. A Christmas tree is to be prepared, and short addresses, singing and music will constitute part of the programme. A small fee will be taken at the door.
Bought at bankrupt sale, to arrive November 16th, a fresh invoice of winter goods, too numerous to mention; also, a fresh lotof coffee and new tea bought for cash and to be sold for cash at very low figures; at Ludd Hopkins's.
From the report of the county Auditor to the Auditor of State, the following statistics are gleaned relative to matters in Jasper county for 1873: —Acres of land assessed, 354,256.43; value ot lands, $2,132,534; value of improvements thereon, $401,277; value of town lots, $82,362; value of improvements, $103,378; value of personal property, $1,247,488; total value of taxables, §3,967,039. The taxes levied, are: State, $6,541.56; school, $6,938.25; county, $19,835.22; road, $6,869.44; township, $1,130.08; special school, §8,094.38; tuition, $4,993.98; dog tax, $982; total amount of taxes on the duplicate of 1873, $55,384.91.

Compiled from the Journal. Fred Stiffler makes a sale on the 13th. The weather prophets predict a long, cold winter. “Buffalo Bill” Maxwell has opened a broom factory. The tombstone engraver has been enjoying a few measles. Cod fish and buckwheat flour are kept in stock by the grocers. Elder Ilendryx, of Indianapolis, preached in the Christian Church Saturday evening Sunday and Sunday evening last. The Remington literary society elected Frank Jeffries, President, Jennie Wooley, Vics President; W. H. Cooler, Secretary; U. K. Neisz, Critic; Ella Railsback, Treasurer; Eugene Jones, Attorney; Verly Kirk and Libbie Jones, Reviewers; and W. C. Maxwell, Marshal, for the present month.— The society is gaining in interest .and becoming livelier each evening.

Refreshments will be spread at about 2 o*clock, p. m., in -order that those from a distance who desire to do bo may return home before dark. Railroad Tax Refunded.
The following circular has been issued from the office of the Auditor of Jasper county: Auditor’s Office, Jasper County, Rensselaer, Ind., Dec. Bth, 1873. The following Order of the Board of Commissioners of Jasper county, at their late session, in the matter of the petition of R. S. Dwiggins et. al. for the refunding of the tax levied and collected in aid of the Fort Wayne and Pacific Railroad, is promulgated for the benefit of all persons concerned: “Ordered.—* * * That the Auditor draw his warrants on the Treasurer in favor of sucli tax-payers in the proportion that the said tax was paid by each. * * And the Auditor shall be governed by the following rules of evidence in issuing such warrants: “Ist. The applicant for the warrant shall produce to the Auditor the Treasurer’s receipt showing that he paid such amount asked for. “2d. In the absence of such receipt, the endorsement on the Treasurer’s Duplicate of such pers&n having paid such amount shall be sufficient. “3d. In the absence of such receipt, or such endorsement on said Duplicate, then the affidavit of the party making such application that he or she paid such amount and that the receipt therefor has been lost or mislaid and that they are justly entitled to receive the same shall be sufficient.” Persons holding receipts for an amount embracing any of such tax •will please send them to this office as early as possible. Those who have claims of the second and third class will please file them also as soon as convenient. In either case the papers may be sent by mail, or by an agent, or a neighbor; and when received al thjs office will be carefully preserved; in the case of a tax receipt embracing other taxes, the receipt will be returned or a duplicate given. Nonresidents, acting through agents or attorneys, must send Power of Attorney (simple form) acknowledged before an officer competent to take acknowledgments, and having a seal of office. * • ■ Upon the undersigned devolves the burden of distributing about forty-eight thousand dollars to four Or save thousand persons, in the proportion each paid. To do this without wrong to individuals, or loss to the public, will require a great deal of labor and care; he promises you to do all in his power to place this money in your hands as early as possible, and to this end will labor untiringly himself and use all available means. In the meantime he asks forbearance and patience from those whose necessities and just claims naturally make them impatient. The proposals for tiie farm will be for a sum named per annum, payable quarterly; proposals for the care of paupers will include washing,-mending and all; service whatever which m».y attach to the proper case and protection of such persons, except medical serv ice and clothing.
