Spicer’s Meanness.
About the meanest little thing that has ctnne under our notice for some time was perpetrated the other day by Spicer, at the drug store, upon two timid ami reserved gentlemen. One of them our friend P , is following the legitimate, and w? dare say lucrative, business of lightningrods for the protection of his fellow men. With almost Christian fortitude he had argued the erection of these life-preserving rods —the only safe and reliable ones in use—upon the house of friend Spicer. How vividly did he picture the horrors, that are liable, to. present themselves to Spicer or any other num whose house does not wear rbtfs—as he returns to his family after a hard thunder shower. \V r ife, child, Ttll piissed into eternity in an instant, and perchance house burned down, and the heavy weight that would forever lay upon his heart that he was the cause. For the sake,of a few paltry dollars he had refused tlie protection and caused the death of a beloved wife and a dear child. For the ninth time he sat down fora few hours talk with the hard-hearted Spicer upon tliis subject, which at the time being was nearest his heart. Just as lie had got fairly engaged Spicer jumped up, ran to the door and calling in a Stranger, brought liim forward aud said: “Mr. P——, allow me the pleasure of acquainting you with Mr. II , agent for the Chicago Life Insurance Company. Mr. II , Mr. P —is a reliable lightning-rod man of our town.” Dear reader, pause for a moment. Imagi ne, ifyou eu.li, -the sit uat ion. Art insurance agent and a lightning rod man mot face to face in mortal combat. What a ir leu in of satisfaction --flashed ever- the counlcnance of Spicer, as he drew oack from the scene that would inevitably follow, and as lie was near the doer he was heard to say ’‘fight- it out on that line, boys, if it takes all summer. lam sorry I can't be with you, but matters at home demand my immediate attenti<>n.” Neftfier agent has I»een heard from since.— Albert Lea (Minn.)
