LOCAL MATTERS.

August 7th, 1673

llerc Is What You was LockIn? For. On the 25th day of next September The Rensselaer Union enters upon its sixth year. For five years the efforts of its proprietors to make it a live country paper, laboring to build up the interests of our county, have been generously seconded by the good people of Jasper county with a liberal patronage. We arc indeed grateful for that patronage and for the many words of encouragement with which our labors have been rewarded. Wo shall strive to make The Union moro interesting and more valuable to its readers, as experience and years bring sounder judgment to its managers. On all questions of local interest, all questions of ethics-and all questions of a political nature, that The Union may have occasion to touCli it will continue to be as fearless, as radical, as liberal (itid as independent as it has been during the five years now drawing to a close. As editors the only allegiance we acknowledge is to Right as God gives our consciences power to recognize it; and the aims pfno individual, or clique, or party that conflicts with right and justice will receive our countenance or aid if we know it. Having thus briefly indicated the polities and policy of The Union in future we desire to 'Submit the following proposilipu-to-. its patrons: . On the IStli day of September, 1873, the subscriptions of a large number Of our patrons expire. As a /slight token of pur appreciation Of their friendship, as well as to utter ah extra inducement for immediately renewing their subscriptions and to have subscriptions as far as possible coiiimcnce with the first of the year, we have concluded to send This Union free during the three months of October, November and December, 1873, to all who pay hs *2 cash on or before Hie first day of October. This is in fact sending our paper fifteen months for the price of one year’s subscription, thereby virtually making each advance pay ing subscriber a present of three months subscription, worth fifty Cents. Those who may be in arrears for subscription will be expected to make full settlement, either by. cash Of hole bearing, ten per cent, inti r-’ cst, when availing themselves of these very liberal terms. —
