USEFUL AND SUGGESTIVE.
A good protection against misfortune —a policy in the Washington Life. Tits juice of bean pods is said-to be a . cure for warts. „; Bruises and' Scalds. —An eminent medical man in India strongly recommends poultices of tea leaves, moistened with hot water, as preferable to other remedies in the first stage of bruises and scalds. Feeding Grain to Sheep. —When commencing to' feed grain to sheep, too much care cannot be taken not to give too much at first; begin lightly and: increase gradually until the maximum feed is reached. To Harden the Hands.— Boil in three quarts of water a pint of horseradish, four ounces bf pulverized alum, and four ounces of rock salt. When this preparation is cool wash the bands in it two oj three times a day fpr a week or ten days. — Exchange. Smoke and Frost.— The practice of building smoke fires in orchards as preventative of injury from frost is an old one, but recently we note that a congress of fruit growers in France have tested the value of a composition, princi--pally of tar, which, burned in iron vessels, gave thick clouds of j smoke that hovered over the lggd for miles around them. The Utica Herald says that the icehouse of L. R Lyon, of Lyon's Falls, N. Y., has not been empty for twenty years, nor has a pound of ice ever been put into it. The kbuilding is constructed aftef*the ordinary 'method, aod when it is designed to fill it, a rose jet is placed upon the water pipe, and as the water comes through it is chilled and drops into the house, where it forma* solid mass.
