All kind* of mixed tickets will be in circulation at the voting precincts in Jasper counts next Tuesday. Let each Rian examine his ticket carefully and be sur* that he votes ior no candidate he does not want to be elected. Mr. G. T. Wickerßfaam. of Wihamac, .Democratic candidate for RepresenUtive in the General Assembly for the counties ofNewton, Jasper and Pulaski, was in town Tuesday looking after his prospects. He certainly does not think that the condition of political affairs in his own county is as lovely for Dc.nocrats as it has been in former years. Dr. Hartman, the Republican candidate for county Auditor will make a Wg lorbed on the three hundred odd Democratic majority of that cnnntyy and there is a possible chance of his election. ' Next Tuesday' is election day. Every maa -ahould be at the polls «sd be prepared to vote as he shall conscientiously believe will' prove for the best interest of society. The elective franchise is not bnly a privilege, but its intelligent exercise'Ts a duty which no good citizen should evade. Study over the whole ground carefully; weigh well the claims of all the candidates presented—their fituess, honesty, integrity and every qualification; consider the history, policy, principles and Jgledgea of the political parties; make up your minds as nearly as po&sibfe without bias of favoritism, and vote for those men and those principles that 6hall seem to your deliberate Judgment to be for, the greatest good to thegreatest number.
We publish to-day the revised premium list of the Fair to be held aa4 Friday of next w*ek. It will be noticed that the entry fee on articles and stock competing for premiums has been reduced onehalf, and many important changes have heea made in the premiums. The changes are very judicious and though thejAtinvoire ap increase in the offered for:prepremiums and lessen the fees to to be paid by competitors, it will give more general result in a larger competition. The Fair being held so late in the season—and daring election week—is not likely to interfere materially •with farmer's work and it is expected there will be a large attendance of people. The officers have been crowded very much to perfect arrangements for holding a Fair this fall, owing to the shortness of time jgiven them to work up the matter, Mt»d some minor details may be -overlooked by them, but mider all circumstances they have shown great energy and excellent judgwent. We think their efforts will be appreciated by the public, whose interests are to be advanced by 4b»« enterprise, and hope each individual will do all he can to assist in making the experiment a com-i ■■ pi etc ctPCc©cß; : • -
If Republicans attend to their duty next Tuesday Indiana will no -longer irbe called- a Democratic State. It is reported to us by gentlemen at Remington who claim to know, that Hon. Jasper Packard, pseudo candidate lor Congress, paid Mr. DeForcst, edltot* of the Remington Jovrnai, three dollars for the friendship and influence of his paper during the present campaign.— This probably explains why Mr. DuForest gave circulation to the silly and false report that the proprietors of the Rexssklaee Union had applied to Mr. Packard for a appointment, which - Mr, Packai^fefusing occasioned their opiwsition to his re-clebtion; and it also was probably the incentive which prompted all the low, slanderous and contemptible flings that ” have been published about us in that paper from time to tira.e during the summer. It is difficult to determine which ia the basest — Mr. DcForest, who prostitutes his columns by the season for three dollars, or the Congressman comrnercing with the prostitute. „
The editors of this paper respectfully, but earnestly, every voter in Jasper county, without respect to party, to vote and labor to induce others to vote, for John A. Henricks for Representative in -Congress. Our reasons for making this request are: Ist. He is an honest man and cannot be corrupted with bribes to vote away public lands to railroads, draining companies, or any similar corporations organized for the purpose of enriching a few individuals; neither will he be induced to vote away millions of dollars to steamboat companies simply as subsides to increase the wealth of their owners. 2d. He is a good business man, and if elected will attend to the local legislation or other business required by the people of his district It would not be necessary to send business of this nature to be introduced or attended to by members from o ther districts, -t 3d. He is an honorable man, and would never prostitute his frank to the circulation of slanders about private citizens in bis district; neither would he consent to accept a nomination procured by—the grossest and most outrageous frauds- -■ -■ ~ 4th. He is in favor of a reduction of all tariff to a Btrict revenue basis; and if elected will vote for such measures ns will tend to build up the interests of liis constituents. sth. Ho is a gentleman, and his election would reflect honor to the judgment and intelligence of the people whom he would represent.
Frem Missouri.
Pacific City, M 0.," -■ ' f ...il Sept. 27, 1871 ~BbreGHfi-UsK)S! - —== Pacific City is a very pretty place, handsomely located and surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is a railroad town and is situated at the poiut where the Atlantic & Pacific and the Missouri & Pacific roads diverge, the former to the southwest, which will be completed to San Francisco soon—some think this summer—and the latter running northwest through a fine country. More than lorty trains of cars pass daily. Large quantities of iron ore are shipped to St. Louis over both roads, and many car loads of all kinds of live stock pass from the West. Indian! ans would not think much of the country for farming, it being rough and hilly, but lands are valued at $25 to SSO an acre. Large quantities of grapes are cultivated and much wine is manufactured here; stockraising also receives considerable attention; and the country appears to be well adapted for both. We have bad grapes For breakfast, for dinner and for supper until we feel like the Hoosier in a? California boarding bouse, who did not mind liver fifty or sixty times in succession, but did not want it tor a constant diet. Pure wine is plenty and cheap. There is a good water power here and no wooleu factory within fifty miles. Situated in the forks of these two important railroads it certainly would be a good location for a woolen factory. Inclosed is a sample of sand which is found here in inexhaustible quantity; it is shipped by the carload to Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, New, York and other points—last year 406 car loads were shipped.— It costs $2 to load a ear; two men and a team will load a car in four hoars, which, when loaded, is worth sl2 for the best. That nsed by rolling mills sells for $8 to $lO per ear. A company would oer-
tainly do well here to go into the manufacture of glass for they pay, SIOO per ear freight on this sand at Pittsburgh and tyuy all they chin get. Improved land is dear- here, though one old settler told me he was afraid there would be another revolution and be wanted to sellout. He bad eleven acres, one-half tillable, the balance a high hill Of this sahd and limestone rock, and three town lots. The improvements were a tolerable house and stable, 2,000 bearing grape vines, 1 300 fruit trees, etc. He would sell cheap for the cash. He would take $4,000 for the whole establishment. Stock looks well. Cattle appear to get plenty to eat. I am told they have to feed only about three months of the year. Respectfully, L-
