Mrs. Ellen J. Jackson has placed us under obligations for a charming' bouquet foses, verbenas, asters, ftißchias, tube roses, geraniums and other brilliant and fragrant flowers. Dr. Gregg’s lccturo on the HeathCn Chinee at the Court House last Thursday evening was poorly attended and we are sorry for it as lie appeared liko a good hearted soul and told some interesting things about the oldest and most curious nation on the earth. There is no particular need of directing attention to J. I. Purcupilc & Co.’s double column advertisement as it is so conspicuous that it must be seen if you look on this page of the paper. The ground is so dry that but little fall wheat is being planted yetby the farmers of either Jasper or counties. Some few however have ventured to sow and others arc plowing and making every preparation to sow as soon as the weather becomes favorable. Isaac R. Lewis and Margaret J. Rev. J. 11. C’issel, of the Laporte Circuit, honored the Union office with a short visit last Saturday.— Notwithstanding the very long period of exceedingly hot weather this summer past, the chicken cholera and the arduous labors of a Methodist Circuit-rider, Brother Cisscl looks robust in health and balances the poise at 210 pounds, j A number of lads from fourteen j to sixteen years df age were <mak- j lag bid reputations for themselves | very fast, last Saturday night.— j They had procured a quart of mean whiskey and caroused about the streets until a late hour, making night-hideous with their obscenity. Somebody ought to, and probably 1 >\ ill, find himself troubled for giving liquors to these young boys. Children under 12 years old 25 cents. Wc are told that a poor, miserable, cowardly creature bought and drank some of old man Tuteur'stinean whiskey the other day and then went home and beat his wife. Wo wouldn’t blame that woman much if she made a raid on Tutcur’s shebang and cleaned it out. And she might learif her husband a valuable lesson if she would watch her chance to tic him down while drunk, cut a gentle hiclebry limb and as soon as he revived to consciousness larrup him with it until lie promised better behavior. One or two Hoggings administered in that manner wguld c t urc him. of his vicious habit. Scrub horse racing, drinking and boisterous conduct is becoming most too fashionable as Saturday evening amusements among a class ol young bucks in this vicinity, who arc old enough to do better. — If these youngsters and their older abettors have not manners enough to behave themselves when in com. pany or away from home, why they better stay at home and never go into company of decent people. It is a disadvantage keenly felt at such times that there is “no calaboose iu which to imprison these i turbulent revellers until ..they
While boring a well for Mr. Samuel Moore, three miles cost of Rensselaer, a few days since, the workmen drilled through a Btratmn of tough, hard . mineral, nearly white in color and quite free of foreign substances —in fact nearly pure metal. The layer is about half an inch thick. Specimens were sentTo the Smithsonian Institute for classification.
