CALENDAR FOR 1871.

In 1840, the number of adult whites in the United States who could neither read nor write, amounted to 549,850; and the same class in 1850 had increased to 902,898, and in 1860 to 1,126,575. As the census returns for 1870 have not yet been completed, it is impossible to ascertain the exact number of illiterate persons at present in the United States; but it is estimated that, including negroes, the number of persons in this country who can neither read nor write must be very near three millinn* .
