Better and Better.
It appears from the official statement of the receipts and expenditures of the government for the fiscal year ending June 30th last, that the showing is better even than was claimed by Senator Wilson in his address as Chairman of the Congressional Executive Committee, to the Republicans of the country. The excess of revenues, over those of the year 1869, isl $39,400,000, instead of $38,000,000, as claimed by the Committee. The saving in expenditure over that of last year is $79,743,000, instead of $67,000,000, as claimed by the committee. That is to flay, the official exhibit is better for the administration, by about $14,000,000, than was supposed to be the fact by the Congressional Committed, who were not furnished with the complete statement, which was not prepared at the time of the address. It is undeniable that a leading issue of the campaign cf 1868 was the question of economy, and reform in the conduct of our public affairs It is certain that in this respect, the pledges of the Republican party have been fairly and honestly redeemed—that economy has been inaugurated and many valuable reforms instituted. It was not within the scope of reasonable expectation that the diverse views upon our abnormal system of finance could be speedily harmonized, but the main fact cannot be disputed that reforms have been made. The expenditures of the government? the taxes of the people have been greatly reduced. On these questions of practical importance, the Republican party can, therefore, go before the people, and with reason and justice, ask their approvar-and support.— Chicago Pott. v
