v {From the Toledo Blade J .—_ MR. NAfiBT DREAMS A DREAM, IN WHICH THE CONDITION OF AFFAIRS IN TIIB EVENT OF A DEMOCRATIC VICTORY IB FORESHADOWED. w Mastkn’s Corners, Mispilion Huwdrrd, I in tus Stats uv Delaware, > , . August I*, 1870. | lAßT“nite I bed bin a readin an indictment nv the Republikin party, by that virchuus paper the Noo York World, moistenin my clay ever and anon with Biithin strengthen from a tumbler, wich Bill Sap furnishes me regler, by order uv the Central Committee. The World recited the thievin and stealin uv the Itadikel organizashun, in detale, and published letters from disgusted members uv that party who purposed to restore the gov ernment to a healthy condishen and secoor an honest administrashen uv affairs ■by votinthfrOUnoeratio ticket this fall, all uv wich the World iusiatid made the death uv Radikalism shoor. The heat uv the evenin, or the strength UV the milter in the tumber (Sapp’s likker is sarchin and he is very economical of water), or both combined, set me to sleep in my chair, and sleepin I dreamed. Methawt I wnz in some kind uv a temple, and in a sort uv a court in the centre, on a couch, there lay the form uv an expirin giant This giant wuz an exceeding hefty one—the largest I hed ever seen, even in dreems. He wuz parshelly clad in armor, indikatln that he had bin recently engaged in battles, and from his still graspin a dented sword, I cor.cloodcd that his weaknis only prevented him from engagin in more struggles. In his arms he held a number uv c.vskets variously inscribed ; and in the apartment, across -the —door uv wich he laid, wuz a strong box half full uv treasure. Standia over him and fannin him anxiously was a female dressed in auteek costoom, wich I • recognized to-wunst ez the Goddess uv Liberty. How I got into the room I know not, but I found myself there confronting this female. “Madam?” sod I, “who is this gallant yooth ?” “ It’s my second foil, Republickinism,” answered she. “ In a bad way,” I remarkt, noticin how heavily he breathed. “ Alas, sir !” retorted she, “he is. Ills life hf z bin a continyooal wariarc, and his constooshn is broken. He hez jist closed a most severe struggle, and its that wich killed him. No sooner hed he conkered our foes afore he had fresh fltes on hand with them-wich he sposed wuz our friends. Beooz we didn’t put him in the front, Chase stabbed him vishusly, tho that didn’t hurt him much coz the old man had wasted his strength a runnin after nominashens, wich is vilent exercise for one so aged. Others like him follered soot,-and tho they didn’t ary one inflict serious injoory, the number of em worred him. It wuz very much like a man fltin ’skeeters. There isn’t much power in any one, but there are sich a number uv em, and they buzz so, that they finally wear one out.” “ Bui these didn’t bring him to his present condishen ?" I askt. “ Not altogether. He had friends wich he trusted and sposed wuz troo, wich stole from the strong box uv wich he hed custody; and others uv the same stripe stole the public lands; and others put their cousins, and brothers, and uncles, and brothers-in-law, and nephews into places where they cood oppress the people; men wich he clcvatid supposio they wuz great turned out to be very small, and them wich hed bin his best friends stoopidly charged all this devilment to his akount and stabbed him. Thor wuz leeches wich took his name and suckt the people, and tho people turned upon him. I begged cm to kill the leeches and spare him, but they waz infuriated and wood eat listen. That sore, (she pintid to one wich smelt) Is a land-grab ; that one a monopoly; that nasty one the frankin privlege; that rash, wich is all over him, is incompetoncy. Jcnckes hed a specificfor that but they woodent let him try it and it struck in. Good men, wich didn’t see that these same leeches, es they lived, and these same cussed diseases, if not cured, wood fasten onto whoever cum into power, the Bameez they did onto my S6n, assaulted the poor fellow instid uv roruedyin wat ailed him. “ But that woodent bev finished him. Yoo notice that immense tumor Jest over his heart That’s tho nashncl debt, wich grower to Sich fearful proporshens doorin his big fltc. It Wnz notist first at the conclooßhen uv tho Btrugglo, and he unfortunitly called in a passel uv quacks. They made it bigger and bigger, and it drawd fearfully on his vitality. Then finally the regldrs wuz tailed in, and they hed to resort to the knife, but they hev taken it off faster than his conatooshen wood stand. They told him he wood live longer to take off less to-wunst, but he insisted on takin the chances. “ I want it all off afore I die,” wuz his constant remark,, and they humored him more than they hed ought to. Then in addition to the diseases he ketchcd from the rotten cusses who got ;closo to him, ho hed his enemies to flto from without The froots uv his big victory which beholds so close in his arms, wuz entrusted to the keepin nv a lot uv mlzable renegades who paid no attention to em, but got to lltin among thclrsclves over tho spoils, and his natral enemies-the Dimocracy kept continually agoin jfdr em. Ho hed to take kecr uv wat he won in his big battle with one hand, and site the Democrisy and his own

camp-followers with the other, and the constant watchin and fltin hez finally wore him out. ’’ At this pint the giant give a convulsive start, his eves sot, there was a gurgle in his throat, his hands lelaxed, ana with a groan he died. The Goddess shrieked, and fell onto the dead body, bewallin him. That room wuz the wildest place fora minit, I ever see, wakin or sleepin. The scene wich ensooed beggared descripshen. In less than a minit the entire leadership uv the Dimocratic party uv the Yoonitea States wuz in that room, and men I hed sposed ded and buried come up ez lively ez fleas." Brite wuz there from his Kentucky home, and he and Vallandigum and one uv the Virginny Masons seezed the casket labelled ‘Ekal Rites ’ from the fingers uv the corps and smashed it into very small fragments. The Goddess uv Liberty was seized and compelled to put manacles onto a nigger, wich she protested agin, sayin that she sposed she wuz done with all that sort of thing. A gang uv ’em wich I recognized ez old offls holders under Bookannon, and later under Johnson, drove out them wich held posishens uv trust and took them themselves —the treasury wuz emptied in a minit, for wher the theeves hed before taken by handsful the new ones toted it off in bags, and the public lands insted uv bein sliced off for raleroads wuz divided up among a half a dozen rings. Immcjitly Ben Wood took possession uv the Noo York Custom House, and drivin out the appointees filled their places with his adherents, among whom I notist all my friends uv the Sixth Ward. There wuznt a honest man left in any offls. The dishonest theeves who were in, flopped in a second, and stayed ; better pleased for they know that now they’d hev noboby to watch em. Vallandigum vaulted into Sherman’s seat; Fenton uv Noo York wuz crowded out uv hlssen by Femandy Wood, Baily uv Boston took Sumner’s place, Dan Yoorhees shoved out Morton, Richardson sot in Trumbull’s seat, Dean uv lowa wuz put into Harlan’s place, and Jeff. Davis took Revels’ seat. In short, ther wuz sich a change ez ther wuz never seen before. In my dream my vision extended ez far ez the Corners in Kentucky. I saw the nigger postmaster hangin m front uv his offls, Joe Bigler the Collector, m front uv hissen, and Kernel McPelter and myself wuz comfortably installed in our old places. In Noo Orleans tho nigger voters wuz mobbed, the Republikin papers wdz destroyed. Gov. Warmouth sought safety in flight, and the Legislacher wuz dispersed at the pint uv the bayonrL.. And over it all the sperits uv Wtgfoll, J. Bookannon and poor Floyd appeared in the air, with an expression uv intense pleasure onto their faces, saying in spent voices, " Tho Los t Coz is Regained." At this point I awoke. Wuzthis dream merely the effect uv the whisky I hed drunk or wuz it profetic ? That my dreem trooly foreshadowed the effeck uv the death uv Rcnublikintsm and the re instatement uv Dimocrisy, I know very well, but is Republikinism to die ? That’s the question. Wood, oh wood that 1 cood be ashoored uv that. Wood that I cood bleevothat ther are -enuff Republikins disgustid with araatoor theeves, to bolt ana give us vetrans one more chance. Wood that I cood hope for so glorious an endin uv this fall's elections. But I fear me the dream wuz too good to prove a

reality.
