LOCAL MATTERS.
Thw»a«»i July 7th, 1870,
Now potatoes are worth 75 oeots a bushel, here,^ Many fields of corn in this county are tasseling out. Hon. Godlove S. Orth will please aooept thanks for congressional documents sent us.
Hon. Schuyler Colfax has favored us with recent copies of the Congrtuional Glob* , for which we return thanks. Unless the managers quit running aham races over the Rensselaer course people will ceaso to come out at their call. The Remington mail route was discontinued last Thursday, June 30th. Postal matter now comes by way of Bradford. See C. C. Starr’s new advertisement He is in his now room, and has a good stock, which he oilers at reasonable prices. The trustees of Weston cemetery disposed of ten lots at their publio sale last Saturday. The first lot sold brought $lO, the others sls each. ' ■+ -•••-♦- We not long since heard a gentlemen remark thathe had sold 75 Common Sense Sewing Machines during the fall and winter of 1808-9, and that he had yet to hear the first complaint. Mr. J. S. Hopkins is the agent for these machines in Jasper county.
Hon. R. S. Dwiggins, President of the Fort Wayne & Pacific Railroad Company, started for Fort Wayne yesterday on business connected with that road. There is to be a mass meeting of the frinds cf the enterprise in the city on the 18th inst., at which will be determined the time and place of commencing the work of track-laying. The 4th of July was comparatively a quiet day in this place.— No arrangements had been made for a systematic celebration and the weather being favorable many farmers remained at home to work in their corn and harvest fields.— Ijn the evening the people had the choice of a church festival, a slight-of-hand show, and a ball, with which to amuse themselves. Again we call attention to the auction sale of lands that will take place in our towii on the 21st day ol this month. These lands, as heretofore stated, lie in the north part of the county aud can hardly fail to become valuable in course of a few years. They will be offered in parens to suit purchasers and the opportunity ot making so profitable investments is np r t likely again to occur. We doubt not that the hundreds laid out in these lands will {Boon grow to thousands, aud that the day is not far distant when real estate, anywhere in our county, will command a corresponding increase in value. As a matter of speculation, certainly, money can not bo invested more profitably, and to occupy as homes, a more desirable chanco could hardly bo conceived of.
Captain A. W. Thomas, whose thrilling exploits while serving the government as a scout and spy during the rebell ion-were published a few years ago in Harper’s and Frank Leslie’s papers, gave three exhibitions of his wonderful feats of legerdemain and ventriloqutal and elocutionary accomplishments, in the Court House, last Saturday evening and Monday afternoon and evening, to crowded houses. We do not remember to have seen slight-of-hand tricks more neatly performed by any professor; many of them were new to us, and we believe, are original with him.— The illusion was perfect and indicates not only skill that is attained by laborious application, but decided talent in their conception. His ventriloquism is sharp and clear.— The mimicry of the cries of animals and the brogue of foreigners, is perfect and without a flaw., Ilis elocutionary displays are not excelled by anything we ever saw, eveu Forrest, the great tragedian, is pot more successful in the celebrated “Richelieu.” Captain Thomas’ exhibitions are first class and fully worth the admission fee. We understand he will give another performance in this place Thursday evening, July 21st, at which he will make bona fide explanations of the manner his best tricks of magic are performed.

Laportc county paid $75 for wolf scalps last year; little Stark paid $77. * Eighteen cents a quart is the price given huckleberries at South Bend. A case has been made up in Tippecanoe county to test the constitutionality oi the railroad tax law. It is reported that a very fine quality of soap stone has been found in large quantities in Cass county. Newton county officials used sl,324.23 worth ot stationery during the year ending June Ist, 1870, which the Gazette thinks is very extravagant. Gov. Baker recently received some seed from the big trees of California, with the request that they be planted in the State House grounds at Indianapolis. It is thought that the democratic congressional convention for this district will bo held at Wanatah on the 10th of August. Au attempt will probably be made to induce Col. Norman Eddy to withdraw from the State ticket and make tho canvass against Gen. Packard. The Lafayette and Kankakee Sardine company was organised night before last with a cash capital of three hundred dollars. It is the intention of this oorapany to build a lodge aud boat house on tho Kankakee. The lodge house will be fitted up in good style, with all the modern improvements, which, of course, will include plenty of mosquito bars. —Lafayette Courier.

M, on Thursday the 21st Day of July, 1870, At the door of the Court House, in the town of Rensselaer, county of Jasper, and State of Indiana, ( will offer at public auction, the following described real estate, belonging to the heirs of John Davidson, deceased, and situate in Walker towusliip, in said county, to-wlt: The southwest quarter, also the southeast quarter of the northwest qusrter of Sec, 7, Tp. 31, north of Range G west; and also the northwest quarter of Sec. 18, same township and range, conlaiuitig, in all, 340 acres. The Circuit Court of Wmillion county, Indiana, at' iu February term, 1870, upon hearing the peiitiou of Wm. D. This land w»s purchased some 15 years ago by Mr. Davidson for the purpose of makings stock farm, but his death soon after, defeated that object,: nd it has since been Held by his heirs, in common, In its oilgiuul wild stale. There are some 40 or 50 acres of good timber on ft, and the balance la prairie, nearly’ ail *f which U dry arable land that can be farmed without duelling. My rant of familiarity with the land and IU surro ndiugs, prevents reference to other local advantages tha< doubtless exist, and which would contribute to the Inducements already mentioned. The future prosperity, however, that is looming up in the ueur future, must reveal lo the dullest iniud that money now invested iu real estate in tne county ol Jasper, cunuot fail, In a few years, to be increased many told. The railroads and other public improvements that are In progress must very soon develop the many natural advantages it possesses and thus eurich the owners of renl estate and add to the general wealth and prosperity of the conuty In view of these prospects, now is the time to invest, and the purchaser of the above described lands will secure a bargain, that in all probability, will n-ver again be realized in Jasper “.ounty.
