Proceedings of the Republican Mass Convention.
Pursuant to notice, a mass convention of the republicans of Jasper county assembled at the Court House in Rensselaer, on Saturday, June 4th, 1870. The convention was called to order by S. 1. 1 hornpson, chairman of the central committee, who stated the object to be the selection of eight delegates • to represent this county in the judicial convention at Kentland June 7th, in the congressional convention at Wanatah and in the senatorial and representative convention at Reynolds July' Ist. The convention was organized by electing Dr. S. C. Maxwell, of Remington, chairman, and Horace E. James, of Rensselaer, secretary. On motion of Col. E. P. Hammond, a committee, consisting of one member from each township, was appointed to nominate delegates to attend the several district conventions. It was specified that in the selection of delegates, that two should be appointed from Marion township, one each from Gillam, Barkley, Hanging Grove and Carpenter townships and that the remaining delegates be apportioned" from the other townships. Upon the suggestion of Captain Wellman, of Hanging Grove, each township was permitted to nominate Its committee with the following result: COMMITTEE ON DELEGATES. Hanging Grove—T. A. Knox. Gillam —W. Union—M. S. Coiner. During the absence of the committee, Hon. Anson Wolcott, Hon. Charles H. Test, J. M. Justice, Esq., of White county, and Hon. R. S. Dwiggins, of Jasper county, were called out and addressed the
convention. Committee on delegates returned and made the following report: “Your committee, appointed to select names to present to the convention as delegates to the several district cbnventions, report as follows: DELEGATES TO CONGRESSIONAL CONVENTION to be held at Wanatah, June 29th. 1870: J. Healey and R. S. Dwiggins, Mavion township. John Qiierry, GiTTam. Wm. 11. Shaw, Carpenter. Geo. 11. Brown, Barkley. O. B. Rockwell, Kankakee. Jesse Wilcox, Walker. D. S. Makeever, Newton. DELEGATES TO JUDICIAL CONVENTION to be held at Kentland, June 7th: W. J. Wright and D. I. Jackson,' Marion township. Samuel McCullough, Gillam. Wm. Haver, Carpenter. G. W. Nichols, Barkley'. S»W. Kitehey, Jordan. - S John Clark, Milroy.' Martin S. Comer, Union. DELEGATES TO SENATORIAL AND REPRESENTATIVE CONVENTION to be held at Reynolds, July Ist: Janies Ritchey and E. P. Hammond, Marion township. E. E. Lockwood, Carpenter. W. N. Jones, Gillam. Wm. K. Parkinson, Barkley. W. W. Bussell, Hanging Grove. Joseph Garris, Keener. Philander Stephens, Wheatfield. On motion of Captain Wellman, of Hanging Grove township, each individual delegate was voted upon separately. All elected. On motion of Col. E. I*. Hammond, in the event either of the regularly appointed delegates fail to attend the convention to which they are appointed, any republican voters of the county who may be present shall be considered as delegates from this convention. At the close of these proceedings, the convention was addressed, by Dr. James Ritchey, Col. E. P. Hammond, S. P. Thompson, Esq., Dr. 8. W. Ritchey and Dr. 8. C. Maxwell. At the close of Dr. Maxwell’s address a motion was made to adjourn, which prevailed. No resolutions were introduced in the convention and no instructions were made to the delegates.
