Republican Nominating Convention.
The republican county convention to nominate county officers will be held at the Court House in Rensselaer on the 4th day of June, IM7O. In this convention the several townships will be entitled to delegates and votes as follows;—Hanging Grove, 3; Gillam, 6; Walker, 1; Barkley, C; Marion, 18; Jordan, 2; Newton, 3; Keener, i; Kankakee, 1; Whoattield, 1; Carpenter, 7; Milroy, 1; Union, 1. , , „ On the same day, at 10 o'clock A. M., a Mass Convention will be held in Rensselaer for the purpose of selecting delegates to attend the various Circuit and District Conventions. Purcupile is a candidate for re-election to the office of Town Marshal. Peach trees blooming finely.— Prospect is good for apples, cherries and pears. Members of Iroquois Library will please promptly return books.— Some are delinquent. “Is it I?” Pass in books and pay dues. We have printed posters announcing the Township conventions. We hope there will be a full attendance of the republicans and that good men will be selected as delegates. Mr. Thomas Hollingsworth has opened his new store, two doors Lelow the bank and modestly asks for a share of patronage. See his advertisement. The Board of School Trustees have extended the fence around the school grounds to enclose the triangular piece north of the old enclosure and protect the sidewalk along Front street. On the 24th inst., at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Nathaniel Hammond, in Barkley township, Mr. Thomas E. Antrim and Mrs. Jane Sale were married by Elder Wm. Wheeler. The Messrs. Hopkins have purchased one of the latest improved turbine water wheels—bran new, : at a cost of nearly S6OO, which .they are putting into theii* flouring mil!.* This looks like business and wo are glad to see it. The next meeting of the Society of Progressive Spiritualists will be held at the Court House in Rensselaer on the first Sunday in June, at ten o’clock, A. M. D. W. Hull, an inspirational speaker ol fine reputation in the Eastern States, is engaged to lecture every Sunday morning and evening through the

A new Lodge of Odd Fellows was instituted atGoodland, Newton county, last Friday evening, under the name of “Goodland Lodge No. 946.” The instituting ceremonies were conducted l>y Dist. Dcp. G. M. Horace E. James, assisted by members of the order from this plaoe and Remington. The officers installed were Wm. M. Scott, Noble Grand, Wm. B. Canine, Vice Grand, Chas. Hartley, Secretary, Blake Wilson, Treasurer. Corporation election is to be held next Monday, May 2d. The most important office to fill is that of Town Marshal. His duties are to collect taxes and supervise the work on the streets. Uiider a recent act of the legislature each incorporated town is a road district within itself and draws public money for road purposes. This year the town of Rensselaer will probably have i about $l5O besides ttyo days labor from each person subject to poll tax to be expended upon her streets, hence the importance of selecting an efficient and judicious Marshal. John E. Trent, formerly doing business in the “Liberal Corner” building, writes to us that somebody in Rensselaer has been corresponding with the sheriff of hip county concerning him, stating that he left this place in debt, &c., Ac., and that a reward has been offered for bis apprehension. He desires us to say that his address is “No. 0 Scott Avenue, Fort Scott, Bourbon county, Kansas,” and if any needy individual wishes to win laurels and the reward, let him proceed Westward, ho! and he will be welcomed with friendly hospitality, by the said Trent. He writes that he is in business in that city, but that he and Mart. Warner have dissolved partnership. Respects to all, <fcc. See the announcement of Hon. Although Mr. War- | ner has never been prominent! in political matters aud may not be ! generally known to politicians in the lltli district, yet bis sterling integrity*his uprightness in business transactions, his fidelity to principles, no less than his acknowledged capacity, have long since made him conspicuous among his acquaintances and they have frequently honored him by their suffrages, until lie to-day he is the jovial and resplendent coroner of his county. Born at an early period of his mundane existence in the glorious old Commonwealth of Con necticut—the land of wooden nut megs, qunhangs and Withcrsfield onions—he learned lessons of temperance, economy and industry in boyhood, which have been of immense practical advantage during the years of youth and curly manhood. We have great pleasure in bringing him thus prominently to public notice, and unhesitatingly endorse him as fully qualities' to fulfil his promises with satisfaction to the masses and profit to himself as any man aspiring to the position.
