An improved shovel plow has been recently invented by our enterprising friend, Mr. Norman W arner. The improvement consists of a contrivance attached to the plow- ; stock or sheath, as an adjustable brace, by which the plow may be raised or lowered at option, as the nature of the soil, the size of the draft animal, or the object of the work may require, by merely turning a couple of thumbscrews. With .this simple invention it takes but a -moment to adjust the plow to any .desired angle. Should the Republican nominations be made early, or not until after raid-summer? We are decidedly in favor of speedy action so that the campaign may be fairly commenced before the busy season comes on. Candidates tor nomination are too apt to bore their fellow citizens of the rural districts and the sooner the pressure is over the better for the people. We are in favor of unity of action. We want no divisions in our ranks. Every aspirant should enter the contest with a firm resolve to gracefully bear defeat. Divisions and dissensions will only give power to our opponents. Let us select the best men and then yield them our cordial and united support.
Remington Letter.
Remington, March 22d, 1870. Eoftoeh Union, Dear Sire:— Our people are again surprised by being called upon to vote for another railroad appropriation. It is amusing to see our people reading the posters. One is taeked up where I have a good opportunity of noticing the effect. They read it all and some of them quietly spit on their hands, 'roll up their sleeves and all seem anxious to begin-the fi K hl * r . We have but little business doing now, but we have plenty of mud.— Now that the religious excitement has somewhat subsided there is nothing to do but listen to the prattle of our Widow Bedotls and Aunt Maguires, (of whom we have several), who are particularly busy just now. Our town-dads are making arrangements to have shade trees set along our streets, and to have side walk &_mad e this summer. Both are says Velocipede. »- - ■■ « The commissioners of Pulaski county refused to order an election upon a petition of their citizens asking county aid for the bort Wayne & Pacific railroad. The Evansville Journal complains of the ingratitude of Fred Douglass, in not mentioning in a recent lecture, in that city, the cordial invitation to come which he had received from a prominent democrat. The ingratitude of the blamed nigger is astonishing. They manipulate butter, after it is bought, in Evansville, and get out half a pint of butter-milk to the pound. Political.
Prosecuting Attorney for the 12th Judicial Circuit,
We understand there are four principal candidates for nomination to this office before the republican convention to be held at Kentland on Tuesday, June 7th, 1870. We, with other of our political friends, hope that the nominee of the convention will be elected in October. That this happy result shall be ensured, it becomes our party friends to act upon a definite plan and with proper motives in making the nominations. Mr. Simon P. Thompton, of this county, i.s a candidate for Prosecuting Attorney, lie is eminently qualified and would be, we have no doubt, acceptable to the entire circuit. Of the other candidates we shall speak no evil. The following facts should be considered by the republican voters of Tippecanoe county at their primary election April 4th, 18701Tippecanoe forms.the 19th Judicial Circuit, whose officers are paid by the State the sum of ttveftty-five hundred dollars. (See acts of 1867, p. 87.) She has more voters than the residue of the 12th circuit.— Her republican county ‘convention resolved that a plurality vote in their primary election should carry the county as an unit in the judicial convention. Then if the claims of locality are improperly considered, she may assume to name of her residents the officers of the 12th circuit also. This would give to four of the citizens in her chief city five thousand dollars of the State’s munificence, while the counties ( of Benton, Newton, Jasper and White would have no resident judicial officer. The 12th circuit has no criminal jurisdiction in Tippecanoe, and the prosecuting attorney would have to go beyond her borders to reach his work, unless, perchance, be act the sinecure and court by deputy. We think the considerate republican voters of Tippecanoe county will negative all appearance of selfishness by casting their ballots for our friend Thompson or some othergood man without Star City limits. Wo think it would be political equity. It would heal differences whereof cometh strife. We have an earnest and well-diciplined enemy to fight, this campaign. We want harmony"and unity of action. All the candidates; for prosecuting attorney are, perhaps, able, and as to merit we cannot nrischoose. — The office is one which touches the maTroW orour social and moral re lotions, and when officers live remote justice comes soured by delay or embittered by vengence. Republicans of Tippecanoe, the success of our party in the 12th circuit is in a moasiibe controlled by ybu.
