Obituary.
Died in Rensselaer, March sth, 1870, John Thompson, Sr. Mr. Thompson was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, October 11th 1801. At tho age of fourteen he was apprenticed I)r. Slight a druggist of Hull, and completed his course when he was twenty-one years of age. In 1823, when twen-ty-two years old, he married and moved to Manchester, England, in which place ho resided thirteen years. In 1830 ho embarked for America, on the ship Tlios. Dick, son, Capt. Lyons, and arrived in New York on the Bth day of Auggust, 1836, having been eight weeks on the voyage. Ho resided in New York two years, and then Allen county in this State. At that time—lß36—the Indians had not left, and there was a Tillage es them within two miles of where he settled,, so that Mr. Thompson might be considered one of the pioneers of Indiana. While in Allen county his attention was directed, principly, to pursuits. In 1857 he camb to Jasper county,‘located in Rensselaer and embarked in merchandising. Mr. Thompson joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1838, and was looked up to as a leader, positions of Steward and Sabbath School Supertendant for many pears, and finally peacefully died a firm believer in tho truths of JesuS'Chrisl.
