Let ns sncceed in having a Railroad constructed through Jasper county, ? tving us a direct connection with MiicagOj the great grain market of the United States, bo that our surplus products may find a short outlet, and Jasper county will fill up as rapidly as any locality in America. There is„nothing to hinder our growth, but the l:iek travelling and trading facilities. We have a kind and salubrious climate —as healthy ns any on the globe — people live to as great age in Jasper as anywhere—Mrs. Makeover, living four miles north-west of Rensfcelner is Raid to be 102 years old, and there is uot less than ten or twelve persons in the county who have attained the age of four score years. We have soil of unsurpassed fertility, prairies of billowy, undulating Deauty, groves that would tempt the sylvian doilies of the ancients, an intelligent and enterprising peoplo, and all that goes to make a country desirable, but lack this one thing. Everybody are invited to attend the (meeting at the Court-house next Saturday and assist with their counsel to devise moans by which we can obtain that which we lack —a Railroad. A Washington correspondent writing of Senator Pratt, of Indiana, says: “Pratt, of Indiana, and MoCreery, of Kentucky, are two of the best sized men iu the Senate; but Pratt takes the palin. McCreery looks best when ho is well dressed, but Pratt is too Titanic to bo contained in clothes.— lie ought to have the old Roman toga, and a short flat sword, and be given a seat in the corner as a model of tho antique Senator.— However, be is too alive to present issues to stay in any corner, and often thunders out liis opinions. I shall never forget the involuntary look he gave Brownlow as he came down the aisle on inauguration day to tho pint form to be sworn. The attendants were holding up the old Ten n essecah T s trom blliig h and, anil the physical ruin w r as so much in contrast with the magnificent physical strength displayed by Pratt, tlii? In'Tuminn nuL lutlix noticing it himself. The tall man from the State, par excellence of tall men, seemed to be querying, as, lie glanced at Brownlow, ‘I wonder if a few stormy years here would reduce me to a thing like that?’ ” SSgPThc LaPorte Argus , a Democratic paper recently started at LnPorte, Indiana, conics to us with a beautiful typographical appearance and lots of reading matter. — As "LaPorte is a large county and nearly equally divided in political sentiment we have long wondered why a Democratic paper was-not sustained there. The Argus is a nine column sheet, and is managed with a good deal of editorial ability by the proprietor. Mr. J. B. Stoll, assisted by Mr. 11. E. Wadsworth., SSTKei'shk, of the Wiuamac Republican, already begins to feel his bats. In the last issue of his paper he wants to know if the gentlemen lined for riding on the sidewalks in this place a or so ago, whre afraid of loosing their horses in the mud of the" street?— No, they got on tho sidewalks to keep the dust out of their eyes.— What is the prospect for afloacrop 1 in "Wiunamac this season. tW’A young friend of OHrs recently from Washington, called the other day and gravely informed us that the National Capital “is very corrupt.” We understand he failed to receive an appointment under tlie Administration. He don’t live in Jasper comity.. Every land owner in Jasper county would bo materially benefitted by a railroad from Indianapolis to Chicago, via Rensselaer. Let every person who owns a town lot oyte acre of land, improved or wild, beTCt the Court House next Saturday afternoon. jGTTkc State Senate has passed a resolution, by avoteof 35t08, expunging their vote of censure upon Lieutenant Governor Will Cum back last Winter. - affirGovcnior Baker has signed the bill abolishing the holding of the: annual Bprlng elections, ana It is now a law. ■ AitoJu;.
