The Proposed Empire.

It has been the cry of Democratic bpeekcrs and their papers that this toOvernment of the (Jutted States Mss Cottar*, that the Oonststation tr,as “basted,” and in fact that the vhohof what used to be “the land as the free and the homo ol tlie was np the wpont,” this mighty wreak was WhP be was taking hin swing a round U is ssud that the lmf*tinlUt, a paster catabHshcd in Mew York to advocate the formation of an * Khrpife, oat of the States that lately tomnosed the American UntOh arc nil Democrats. As any government is better than none, they propose some thing that is .tangible, and arc deserving of more credit than those | who hiwra said that, the Constitute >n was gouo, and ot a Kepublie we had an absolute despotism, and yet fanmhed no means for any* relief from the despotism that they claimed they had endured. So far as we have been able to learn all the people who have pronounced in favor of the scheme to form an Empire on this continent, are Democrats. Indeed we know of no one not a Democrat who has ever thought of it in any other light than a foolish proceeding. Something on the etyle of “Brick” Fomkroy’s Democrat. But it seems there are a good many not a hundred miles trom here who think that an Empire would just suit the American people. That then we would have a titled aristocracy and every one of the fools think they w ould be Lords, Counts, Dukes and The is the legitimate fruit of Democratic assertions, that tlw Constitution is no longer any accouut, and that the liberties of the peoplo arc destroyed, and it only attempts to carry to its legitimate conclusion the idea that if we have no government wo had better organize one. The Imperialist helps us out of the difficulty. While the Democratic leaders leave us without anything, as a substitute for the thing we have already. As this psper is a Democratic ooneem we commend it to all our Democratic friends who howled daring the canvass last fall that Gbant was going to establish a monarchy.
