Very Reprehensible.
The habit of driving teams, bitching horses and riding over and on the sidewalks is of late becoming | quite common in Rensselaer. This is a very wrong practice and should be at once discontinued. Chapter 137, Section 1, of the Statutes of Indiana, Volume 1, Gavin & Hold, declares by an act of the Legislature approved March 3, 1850, “That it shall be unlawful fur any person to ride or drivo upon the brick* stotldj plank or gravel sidewalks of any town or village in this State, where the street is lorty l’eet or over in width, unless in the necessary act ot crossing the same.” Section 3 provides “that any person who shall violate any of the provisions of tliis act shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be lined in any sum not exceeding threo dollars.’’ Sidewalks are made lor pedestrians exclusively and it is not only annoying, but as shown above, it is a violation of law for persons to wear them out and cut them up by riding or driving over them witli animals or teams. Wo trust the habit has grown out of inadvertanee or an igj norance of the law, and that this notice will be sufficient to prevent its further violation, but if people continue to transgress wo are cerI t.Rn one or two prosecutions and ! a line or so properly assessed j against persons guilty of this misdemeanor will stop the habit.
