Rensselaer Union, Volume 1, Number 24, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 11 March 1869 — Preparing for Spring. [ARTICLE]
Preparing for Spring.
Some weeks since an article appeared in the columns 6f the Union in which it was stated that Messrs. Stackhouse A Bro., had found it necessary to increase their store room which they had done this winter by building on an addition thirty by forty feet in size and two stories high, and that now ♦hey occupied the largest business house in the county. Since the appearance of that article, the gentlemen referred to have been busily engaged in thoroughly renovating their rooms and preparing for the reception of the largest stock of Hardware, Cabinet Furniture and Agricultural Implements ever displayed in the county This week a portion of the stock has been received—-three wagon loads arrived Monday.’ Large quantities are daily expected at Remington and Francesville, as we are informed, in addition to the goods already at these* points, and as soon as the roads are in condition to permit it, teams will be employed on both roads daily, to bring this large stock to Rensselaer. Of agricultural implements plows will be first in demand in the spring. With the design of making a speciality in this item of their business, wo arc informed that this enterprising firm has invested largely in plows and paying cash have been enabled to buy at the very lowest wholesale figures, and consequently can sell cheaper than irregular' dealers and agents who make their commissions off the parties to whom they men of no experience to attempt competition with those who haris Keen trained in a business from boyhood, and it is equally an error believe that an agent selling on
commission can give as good bargains as a regular dealer who invests his moh.y in the trade. The agent must either sell an inferior article or else charge a high price. Then let all who want good articles, at low figures, deal with Messrs. Stackhouse A Bro., who are established in the place and have a reputation to sustain, and avoid irresponsible peddlers and agents.
