Common Pleas Court.
Tlie Jasper Common I‘icas Court is in sesalon. lion. A. J.. Jones, of Yaparaiso, presiding pro iem. His Honor Judge Gillott, being » M grieviously tormented” with sore h/iils, couldn't come. Our legal friends appear well satisfied with the way business is being conducted.
To Road Supervisors.
The attention of Road Supervisors is called to Chapter 170, Revised Statutes of Indiana, (Gavin & Hurd, Volume I.), Section 10, of Act approved March 5,1800, which reads as follows: “Every supervisor shall erect and keep up at the forks of every highway and ©very crossing of roads within his district, suitable guide posts and hoards with suitable, proper nnd legible inscriptions -thereon, directing the way and mentioning the distance to the most noted place <w each road respocW ively,«fcc. A Row.
A regular, full-blown, city saloon on Front Street, last Saturday evening about seven o’clock. 'i'll© proprietor of the saloon, Mr. John Baldus, was beaten so severely about the head and face fts to keep him in bed ever since. Mrs. Baldus interfered to help her husband, and had nearly half the hair pulled out of her head and both ear-rings pulled through her ears, besides having her head badly bruised. Both wetos dragged out into the street. Young John Baldus, a one-armed boy, was hit over the pose and got a black eye. And Peter Baldus, a one-legged boy, was struck over the back of his neck with something harder than a feather pillow. The saloon furniture was pretty badly smashed up, oiul considerable quantities of blood, mud, etc., were sprinkled and spread and scattered about, on the bar, the walls, the tables, the floor, and the doorcasings. Sunday afternoon, young John BaldnS filed a complaint with Justice Harding, lagaihst WlllfiHn powers, Joseph Rowen, George" Robinson and Oliver Robinson; charging them with riot, and Depnty Constable Frank J. Purcupile was sent to arrest them. He succeeded in finding Powers, Rowen uDd George Robinson, who were taken to the Court House for trial. While preparations were being made for their examination and the constable was out summoning witnesses, Powers and Rowen tonnd ! oportdnity to escape from the Court roony in to the darkness outside, and hare not sincedseen seen. The trip! Of George Robinson was postponed until next Saturday. ■ i■ ■ » -■ »■■ - "faler nearly ruining your hair by the use of lard preparations under the name g ul «e “oils," apply "Barrclt’S Vegetable Hair Restorative,” which not only renews but reMpres it to its original softness and jiftue.— Ttrri Hake JSsprcis.
Business.
From present indications, all kinds of bnsinees In Jotpor county will rcccivi a new impetus in tlse coming spring. Last year produced good crops, which a favorable fall enabled our farmers tio secure. An unusually open winter has made even a moderate supply of feed ample for the keeping of Btoek. All farm produce brings good prices and finds a ready market at the doors of the producers. Pork sells for double the prices of former years; com comma nils thirty and thirty-five cents a bushel in the crib; cattle sell at war figures—forty and fifty dollars being asked for a milch cow; butter sells readily for twenty and twenty-five cents a pound, and everything else is proportionate.— Then the real estate market is uncommonly active. Immigration is constant, and the new-comers are, generally speaking, well-to-do farmers from the Eastern States, attracted thither by the wonderful fertility, beauty and cheapness of our lands. They bring with them hab : its of industry, economy and improvement, together with money to back their enterprise. TIIVJ come here to stay, and willingly pay reasonable prices lor- good locations. 11l view of these favorable ap- i pearauces, wo hear of at least three new stores about to be opened in Rcftsselaer. Wu wish success to all legitimate enterprises, and can not prove our good will better than* do recommend those about to etH’ bark-in business in this place, to study the history and practice the lessons to be learned from the career of the well-known firm of j Stackuousu & B«o., dealers in ' hardware, tinw are, cubinetware, ! agricultural implements, seeds, etc. Coming here strangers in 1857, | they Commenced with a smallTapj ital, occupying a single small room, | and estimated their sales the first year at a few' hundred dollars, but succedcd in making warm personal friends among the people, and laid the foundation for the positions to i which its members have attained in society and business. Persevering industry, close attention to business and strict honesty in all their transactions, have made for them a reputation worthy the aim and emulation of all. From a small beginning, their business has steadily and rapidly increased until this winter they found it necessary to extend the size of their store, and now they occupy the largest trading house in Jasper county. Their tftorc is thirty by one hundred feet in size, two stories high and is the fifth door east from the north-east corner of Washington and Front streets, fronting Washington street. This large building will b* filled in the spring, top and bottom, with a complete and new stock of hardware, tinware, cabinet furniture, etc., while the latest- improved -farm machinery will be on exhibiton in a separate department. - Wc have not the space this week for more extended notice of this large establishment, which is at once the prijle of its owners and an honor to the place, but must close for the present with an invitation for everybody toTall and see how cheaply they sell go"od goods. Also, notice that Stackhouse & Bno., advertise.
Cheap Lands.
People who came to Jasper county in its earliest settlement found lands amazingly okeap. The country was beautiful and fair to look upon. A little money would buy ft large tract of property. They invested all they had at the time, and added to their possessions as they obtained surplus means. They improved and cultivated . a part and built homes for themselves. That which was left uncultivated was kept for their children. Large tyacts wore in this way accumulated. The original owners have died and been buried by their survivors. Their children have eqmc into possession of tlieir inheritance;, and jßud a large pipognt ,of property taxed against them that yields no income. They are ready nnd anxious to sell a part that they may improve and cultivate the rest. Here are rare opportunities oflared those who have a little capital to invest in a healthy locality abounding with natural beauty unsurpassed ip the West, and the fertility ot whose lands is truly wonderful. This spring unusual inducements are offered to aotual settlers. Among other Valuable, property in the market, is upwards of seven hundred acres, owned by Hepry Weston, Esq., 172 Broadway, New York. It joins the town of Rensselaer on tho North. It is mostly high, dry prairie of inexhaustible richness; is in close proximity to market} * large public school open nine months of flic-year is in sight; four churches!
can be teen from any point on it; good stores, grist mill, post office, Court House, printing olfioc, bank, hotels, etc., etc., withiu fifteen minutes walk, besides other advantages wc have not the space to enumerate. Sec the advertisement. Makbieu:— February 16th, bv Justice E. T. Harding, Mr, J. A. Zook and Miss Elisabeth Leflcr; ail of Jasper county.
RAIL ROAD LAW.
Oiler the exact amount of your fare, ami you will secure a passage. Tickets* are good until used.— “Good for one day, only” is a dodge. , But there is an awful rush for good lands in Jasper county, and those who desire good property at cheap rates would do ’well to call on I>wiggins & Thompson, Real Estate Brokers. - their advertisement.
