LOCAL MATTERS.
Thursday, January 28, 1809. j » | - ■' i hiii'T i i' ""i ■■n* i ■■* ..■-.■■i I 'has ftioently. been ! an influx of strangers to this place, looking for farms for rent or falc. Persons having property to dispose of should make arrangcnjflkts with some real estate dealer iiTrown, who has more time and better oportunities for effecting bargains than persons living in the country. In looking over tho Umox, it will be seen that Messrs; Dwiggins & Thompson, Hammond «fc Spitler, Wm. L. MeConugll and John Baldus are engaged in this business. And it will pay you — certain—to advertise your property in the Union. The cost is hut a trifle. •It works this way: By inserting a notice in our paper, your want is made known directly, not only to hundreds of readers, but in many cases they tell it to others who do hot enjoy the happy privilege of perusing its columns, these in turn tell others, especially if they hear anybody inquiring for a location. Then, again, a stranger comes into the place, looking for a farm; hg puts, up with cither mine host of the Dunlap House or the genial and Svholc-souled proprietor of the Xustin Hotel; after partaking of the ‘fitibstaiHial fare on the well-kept table, and he has recovered some' what from the fatiguing ride which brought hint to our beautiful town, he makes known his business to the landlord and asks him for informamatiou. Friend- Dunlap and friend Austin take the Union, read it, have seen your advertisement, and at, once tell the stranger,-enlarging on the location and its advantages, and next morning you have a visit, and if terms suit, make a contract. — . ■% ■«« ♦- * —- weeks’ of steady, mild, sun-shiny winter-weather, was interrupted yesterday morning by a snowstorm which set ip from the south-west, and continued all the forenoon. MARRIED.
On Sunday, J:mnarv~^h r ~1>44) T at the residence of Mr. R. J. Hopkins, in Rensselaer, by Elder D. T. Halstead, Mr. Samuel Babb, of Remington, and Miss Catherine Geiger, of Wolcott, White county. The young couple have our best wishes in their new found happiness. And if the trials and vexations incident in life, should press too heavily upon her, and in an unguarded moment her tongue shall reveal a too petulant regard for fxM, we are confident that he who has braved the dangers of the bat-tle-field will not so far forget his gallantry as to attempt to gap her. We suppose the cake was 'of extra quality, from the fact it was lost in trasit, an unregenerate guerrilla having foraged it, for which may the Dispepsia have mercy on his jts&oniaoh—if he sins no more.

Persons having unsettled claims for Pensions, Bounty and Back Pay, should call at McConnell's Law Office. Captain McConnell is the only person in Rensselaer who attends to this )»ind of business. . .y ■

Tho democratic party, though ■ beaten in the late contost, came out * of the trial with greater numerical strength than it hud ever contained, and with a spirit not loss dauntless ; than would have animated it had it J been successful. It proved, again, . in this event, as it bad proved in the - event of many *past reverses, that it bus vitality which no reverse can impair, and which, indeed, grows greater as the work it has to do increases in magnitude. Looking at its vitality, and at the nature of its work, and at the discordant and deetructiblo elements of the party opposing it, nothing is more eertaiu in tho future than its early return i to power. It will be this result tbut 1 shall roward every democrat who has watohed, and waitod, and prayed, and remained faithful, in all the dark days of the past. Til* Chicago Timks will aid in tlm*ttaiH*aaßFT)Ltbis result with ail (be power it possesses, in the belief that it is absolutely essential to the recovery of those rigblß and liberties of which the states have been despoiled, and to the arrest of that drifting toward centralization, which, if not stayed, will reduce stato lines to the same consequence as tho lines of counties ami towns, and establish a despotism at Washington all-pervading and moro hateful than any- oligarchy of Europe. The states must again manage their domestic affairs in their own way, subject only to tho constitution of the United States.
