STREET LOUNGERS.
Our boys are mostly modest and well-behaved, but there some little boys, and others not so small, running wi lgrgtr about rtte whose tongues are ill-governed.— They use fearful profanity and the lowest of epithets. Where are their parents? *
GREENBACKS !
Dr. Wm. H. Martin respectfully notifies his friends that he is in great need of money and must collect what is due him. Those indebted will do a favor to him and themselves by settling their accounts immediately, Nov. 11, 1868. 1-7. Messrs. C. D. & J. D. Hopkins made us the present of some very nice buckwheat flour, last Saturday, for which they will please accept our thanks. The Rensselaer Mill has been overhauled and thoroughly repaired the past summer, and much new machinery added.— This Mill is now on a footing to compare favorably with any in the State, and the quality of its work is equal, if not superior, to any that has been imported to the place in the last five years. Farmers of Jasper county will now be saved the necesity of hauling their grain fifteen, twenty and thirty miles to have it ground, and those who buy flour and meal will be saved the extra charge for transportation, which has frequently amounted to three and four dollars on a barrel of flour. Winter, Spring, and Buckwheat Flour, and Corn Meal of first quality for sale cheaper than any imported from abroad. Patronage solicited.

Our public school is in session witli a fair attendance. "3The teach' era are giving good satisfaction, which we are glad to know. Wc will notice them farther after wc havft done a patron’s duty and visited the schools ourself, *.
SATURDAY NIGHT.
The journal of seven days is complete. The summit of days is almost here. At Dawn we will look upon the Eden of the week. The Saturday night of rcst is sweet to the puro in heart and successful in business. The last Saturday night in life will soon conio to all of us> May we deserve the rest promised to the blest. X.
GOOD TEACHING.
We understand that thirteen applicants were licensed to teach scnool at the examinations last Saturday. Teaching is the most necessary profession to Church aDd State. The evils of poor teaching should cease, but will not until young scholars stop making it their refuge as a steppingstone to a more gainful employment, and until better compensaUou-ia 1 given and larger wages earned. The patrons should take a more deep and abiding interest in schools. We think, however, that schoolteaching is improving in our county. A number of our most talented young men undertake it with delight and perform the duties with dexterity and success. *. “Barrett’s” Celebrated Hair Restorative.
CASH PAID.
We wish to buy ten cords of good sound wood, for which we will pay the money. James & Hkai.ey, Proprietors Rensselaer Union.
ADVICE.
“first class.” ... “There is room up-stairs.”— Webster. It is not the good trade that makes men rich, but a good knowledge of that trade. It is better to be a firstclass cobler than a third-class lawyer. There is more honor, pleasure and money in it. The professor must be fitted by nature and art for his profession. Man is a little lower than the angels, and to this present time has not learned to do profitably more than one thing at a time. ‘‘l tell you, Boys,” said a quaint old farmer, “its slow work growing pumpkins on squash vines.” Be sure you choose the right avocation. Then fight it out on that line “if it takes all summer. Keep the life-boat headed up the river and use the oars. This is fast becoming a wonderful world. Every thing is done by steam, and soon the sun's coloric will do that for art which it now does for nature; furnish light, heat and motion. Our people have invention ou the brain. We must be up and ready for mighty enterprises. Bustle about and you will meet with the veriest luck in the market Physicians get real patients by riding to see fanciful ones. A file of papers tied with red tape carried under a lawyer’s arm oft secures a client. To him that hath shall be given. Quit dreaming and look about you—mind your chances and keep busy and you can get up stairs and be of the first class and the first in the class. X. “Time may sear and blanch your brow,” but it cannot silver your hair, if you use that excellent renew er known as “Barrett’s Vegetable Hair Restorative” to the absolute exclusion of all the vile compounds with which the market is flooded. —Portsmouth Journal.
