Varieties of Poultry.
PaoccH Bav.xDS.—Of all the French breads which hare been introduced into the United States, and there hare been three, ▼is., the Creee Coeurs, L-tfletche, and tleudans, the Becoavs hare proren the hardiest and beat and are mow thoroughly acclimated. They are ex* tremely hardy, mature rery early, are persistent layers, and are an extra fine table . sad market bird, owing to.the unusual whiteness, juiciness and tenderness of the flash. The Hoodan has more breast meat aad shrink* lea* in proportion to hi* size than any other known rariety. Some claim that a Houdan will drees one-filth more, ready for the kitcheD, than any other fowl •of th* same weight. They rank high with any of the improve! breeds. They are not "high flyers" and are contented almost anywhere. In disposition they are lie and sprightly. They are virtually nonsitter*, and therefore in order to raise them, it i* necessary to keep hens of some other breed; a few Cochins or Brahmss answer beat as they make the best known mother* ersitters. Chicks seldom die except by accident. At three months, so rapid is their growth, they will weigh as much as Brahmas hatched at the same time. Their thick crests and beards are an effectual protection from frost in winter. Wh >ever breeds them is apt to take considerable pride in them as their quaint comical ap-poar-ioce always attracts the attenlnn of vilitor*. Cocks at maturity weigh seven to nine pounds and' hens six to seven, or evea more when tatted (They are not a email breed of fowls by any means. Tbrir plumage is it bright bronzy Mack, evenly 'ih.'er s pcrs«d with white fearh>rs.- B-th hen and crovrer bare a large crest and head, but while that of the heu is compact like a hood, that of tUa cock is mow like a plume. They have but little coinb or wattles, slatty legv, five toes on •nob foot, long tails; and jrc s ateiy and proud in carriage. -
A Reputation.
For two or three month* pa*l I have no-' ti;?e*l that tho Ntw York Tribune while “lrtrf’.on most other suhjett;, sceius to take pride in tl.ac-iuraging funut-rs fro u in* v*-*iin)f in fine poultry. Comparing thi* with their u>ual course, which is to rec«»mmend all improved varieties of either seel or-s toe*. seems at the least parnduxicul. The editor t-f this department, together with other non-fauciers, hare again and •gain reaffirmed tloir opinion that fanciers have never becefiited the ordin-iry stock of farm poultry. An article which appeared in tbe Poultry Yard ever a jear since, an■went such men better thau 1 aai capatile of doing; therefore without further excuse, I quote verbatim: ••Though forced to allow that the introduction of the Asiatics bos increase t the size of almost all breeds of domestic fowls, they retire ou a naw sir nghold, and fay that the modern varieties lack constitution, and ured |>erpeiual nursing toke-p them in health through the winter.” Few old fanciers k<-ed this talk, for they know that it has grumbled along for years, and will always reu.ain .the plaint ot ignorant persons. But numbers of amateurs wbo-bave not tbe experience us for a foundation on which to base their opi* ions, fed. now and then a .uomeutary une tsme-s on this point, and ask themselves if us er all. this business can be merely a fancy! ; 'Now for the facts. The Brahmas, Cochins, Leghorns, or Hamburgs will hatch from a clutch of thirteen eggs, a- many live healthy chick’s as a dunghill will produce from sixteen or eighteen. Do yuu doubt this? ask any oid fancier, or if y u think he might be prejudices], a<k anyone who Las ever bred both kinds of fowls in teUigently and convince y jurseif by a t borough canvass of the true stale of the matter. ‘'But these fowls, many of them, have enormous combs and wattles that ere liable to freeze.” True enough, and y.>u hit on one of the objections to some varieties which are much prized.. But renn*mt>er that the Leghorns, Spanish, and Andslus - ana came froondne sunny shore of the iterraneen, where they sever experience the rigors of our colder climate, and sse what oar continued fanciers have dune. Already the combs have been reduced Horn ■even to the “five or six, five preferred,” of tbe latest standards, and a few breeders have obtained specimens possessing perfect rose combe. Can this he called a step toward producing a less hardy fowl? , ‘ Take almost any variety, for instance, the Brahmas, which originally bad quite a large single comb. The exhibition birds of this.variety are perfectly pea oombeJ, and possess a comb about as nearly os possible, impregnable to frost We might go through the whole category of the fowls now hred in this country, and point out the peculiar hardiness systematic breeding bas given each, where in-breeding and other abuses hake been avoided, but it is sufficient te give pertinent examples and leave the detailed comparison.to •ndividnai search, satisfied that common sense w.ll teaco investigator; that energy, intelligence and system will no more tend to deterioration in poultry, than in other live stock. - John Vaughn, a citizen ,of Earl Paik, Bentou county, -on Saturday of week before last deliberately commit ted suicide by takiug poison. He was a man of family, and aged about 63 years.

LOCAL CHIT-CHAT.
We wish you a happy New Year and hops Vou had a marry Christmas. Lyman Zee nominates "Jim" Irwin for clsrk of Jasper county, and saya he will be elected, too. Rather early? Yea, but Lyman is irrepressibl* and belitvae in taking time by the forelosk. Ho bas not been long married, and yet, when he bought his new skates and mapped out for last Sunday a jolly time on tbe ice, he perforce must leave them with a friend and he j mum at home; not that hia wife would object, oh, no! but tbea—well, you know bow it is y ourself. Where, when and how did that Ida Dodge pick up such expressions as "four aces,” "ace, right and left,’’ and other expressions supposed to belong exclusively to that class of young men who, pulling loose from "mothers’ apron strings’’ and disregarding the "governor’s” counsel, o<>nclude to "go it alone’’? My dear Ida, wby is this thus? Hot long since a Michigan City bruiser and confidence sharp tried to "spring his trap” on a Jasper county drover who was returning "in funds’* from Chicago, but ye countryman "tumbled to bis racket’’ and the disgusted tiiark found that be bad "run a foul of a snag” and that our drover was not susceptible to eithei "bluff” or "soft sawder.”
Ladies, read this when he is away from home. One of our merchants not longsinee was heard to say there were in this town from twelve to fifteen ladies (?) who were chronic loafers; come in, you know, of Saturday afternoons, trade to the amount of a nickel, or mayhap a dollar, and lounge on the couaters or the seats the rest of the day in tbe way of would-be purchasers. Young men, this calls for a declaration of rights. Look to your laurels. We drend the very n.ime of apoplexy How many a bright and shining light has by this been suddenly extinguished! How many a brilliant career cut short! So we cogitated as we saw the form of oue of oar well known citizen* topple ftom its seat, and. falling over the hind wheels of a wagon, light on its head and then sink trembling to its mother earth, a victim to—beer. No injury except a bruised head, the devil having protected his own. What an effect the grand ball had on our community 1 Young men, and women, boys and girls, and, must I say it? many estimable citixens whom we supposed above the allurements of this world, have been seen, yes, and publicly, too, practicing a new quiokstep something after this fashion: Slide out one toot quickly; bring the other down quick and sharp by the side of the first; reaoh for your partner ( understood) with one hand; claw the air with the other; come to an upright with a jerk; furtively look around to see if any one noted the display. Sometimes the effort seemed exhaustive, and the victims would sit down to
rest before moving on.
