The expenae approximated $4,044,351 and the percentage a* cost of collection will be 2.70, a reduction of .18, as compared with the preceding fiscal year. The exact cost cannot bedsAnitely stated until the accounts have beam received. From spirits the receipts were $80,671k--070, an increase of $807,443. The largest item of increase under this head was fronh fruit spirits, the receipts- of $1,584,8T0L being $488,863 in excess of last yea* Be* tail liquor taxes increased by $221,106$ rectifiers’ taxes, $49,458, and the wholesale liquor dealers’ special taxes, $46,-* 243. The only decreases noted wersi trifling. Tobacco brought in a revenue of sßDkt 711,629, or $1,006/721 more than was ds-t rived from tkls source, m the, preceding year. There was a general increase lit all the items under this head, the largest being in cigarettes under three potmM per thousand, where the receipts wsr* $2,021,195, or $357,493 more than in tbsi preceding year. Chewing and smoking tobacco brought in $15,220,028, $323,849 more than in the preceding year. Cigar* and cheroots over three pound* per thoorsand realized $12,713,267, an increase of $221,300, and snuff .afforded a revenue es $752,915, ; an increase of $103,027. From fermented liquors there da* rived taxes aggregating $83,784,235, oa $2,143,617 more than during the preceding year. Ale, beers, and similar liquor* brought in $33,139,141, an increase at *2,094,826. There was a falling off of $189,778 fai the taxes realized from (the revenue from which amounted to sly* J 219.432. The decrease was general Ig !all the items under this head, the largest Item being $112,817 in the direct tax on oleomargarine, while retail dealers’ taxes fchrunk $57,215, and wholesale dealers!* taxes $26,520. The miscellaneous receipts diminished ? 182,600 during the year, the largest itenh eing $122,458 decrease in the receipt* from playing cards, which were only) $259,853. , * i During the year 67,039,910 ga-Hons of spirits distilled from other material than fruit were withdrawn for consumption* S, decrease of 7,413,119 gallons as com* bared with the preceding year. Cigarettes to the number of 4,042,391,640 wsr* drawn out, 1 which, was 714,987,860 room than were consumed during the preceding year. The number of cigars and cheroot* Withdrawn was 4,237,755,943, an increas* of 73,783,503. Chewing and smoking tobacco was taken out to the amount at 253,667,137 pounds, an increase of 5,397,499 pounds. Illinois returned more internal revenn* taxes than any other State; the total-col-lections being $31,973,133. New York came next in order with $21,620,470, Kentacky stood third with $14,903,110. Ohio and Pennsylvania were close together with $11,947,724 and $11,145,548 respectively. Indiana fyad $7,693,154; Missouri. $6,959,911; Maryland, $5,968,895, and Wisconsin, $5,012,077. None of the rsremaining States reached the $5,000,009 mark in the rethtns. |
