The excavations for the- basement and foundations are approaching completion, The smooth level condition of the bedrock has been found to continue wherever it has been uncovered. As Mr. Lutz, the superintendent says, not one building in 1000 has such a fine resting place for its foundation walls... John Kohler has the contract for all the brick used in the building. It is a big contract as alx>ut 1,000,000 will be needed. Day Bros, have the contact for the sand, cement and lime. Anson Stewart for unloading and hauling the stone.
Large sheds are being erected for the accommodation of the stonecutters, about 25 or 30. of Whom will soon be at work. The stone is expected to begin to arrive this week The stone-cutters will not need to make any mistakes in cutting any of their stone work, as the exact size and shape of every stone in the building will be drawn on paper, to a Irfrge scale. This work is being done by a son of Mr. Lutz, and a practical stone cutter and a draughtsman of great skill and accuracy.
