More Shooting at Shelby.
Another shooting Affair and one that has since proved to be a murder by the death of the victim, took place at Water Valley, or South Shelby, Sunday morning. ’ Andrew DeFries, landlord’Of the Sollars House, was the in in-shot, and/ Herman Hasper, his brother-in-law, shot him. De Fries kept the hotel and Hasper managed the saloon in connection. DeFries invited Christie Vick, our townsman, to give a dance at his pl&e', Saturday night. Hasper made a kick about the dance, but finally consented for it to come off. It was held Saturday night, and Hasper was there in a very ugly mood. He tried to pick a quarrel with Vick, and once followed him out doors, with the evident intention of doing him up. Sunday morning, at breakfast, at the Sollan house, De Fries asked Hasper why he had-not helped serve the supper at the dance that night. Hasper answered that it was not any of De Fries’———business. De Fries then struck at Hasper with his fist, not reaching him however. Hasper at once drew a big revolver and shot De Fries in the abdomen, the bullet striking about the upper part of the bowels; doctors were sent for, from Rose Lawn and Lowell, but when they arrived they found De Fries bleeding inwardly, and evidently mortally wounded. He lingered nearly two days, and died Tuesday morning about four o’clock. B. D. McColly, Deputy Sheriff of Jasper Co., happened to be at Vick’s place, Sunday, and he and Vick arrested Hasper and took him to Crown Point, where he was lodged in jail.
