The Republican City Candidates.
Next Tuesday May 5, occurs Rensselaer’s first city election, and the Republicans of the city may well feel proud of the men whom they have nominated for onr fir&t officers. Thos. J. McCoy, one the most universally and deservedly popular men in northwest Indiana, will make an ideal mayor. He will preside at the council meetings with perfect fairness and impartiality, and with the necessary dignity and decorum. At the same time he will put enough of his superabundant energy into the work, to keep the business of the town moving with “neatness and dispatch.” And while Mr. McCoy is an earnest and enthusiastic Republican while out of office, when in it he will seek only the good of the whole city. Chas. C. Starr, the old reliable town treasurer has by his many years of faithful service as treasurer of the town of Rensselaer amply demonstrated that as treasurer of the city of Rensselaer he will be equally reliable and faithful. Schuyler C. Irwin v the candidate for City Clerk, is a young man of marked ability, of good education and deservedly esteemed and respected by all. He will discharge the duties of the office carefully, efficiently and conscientiously. Thomas McGowan, candidate for City Marsha)., is a man who would rather work than sit still; and a man also who has plenty of brains to direct his own and other’s work in the most efficient channels. Without any disparagement to otb«r good men who have been Marshals in Rensselaer, we feel safe in saying that during the two years Mr. McGowan was Marshal of Rensselaer he provf.d himself to be the most efficient Marshal the town ever bad. His defeat now would be a public calamity. The various candidates for Councilmen: M. R. Alter and F, B. Meyer, in the First Ward; J. C. Porter and C. G. Spitler m the Second, and Wallace Robinson and Joseph Right ln the TKirdrire all men of tried judgement and high character, and good business abilities. They will manage the affairs of the city in a careful, intelligent and business-like way. ■ —-The, laeq kst and finest atocit of millinery goods ever open ed In te wn at Mrs. lines’. b i
