Bro. Boh Democracy. J. D. Rich, editor and publisher of the Brook Reporter, though bora and brought up a Democrat, has at last seen the fallacy of Democratic principles and practiced, and he now makes a flatfooted announcement of his intention to henceforth train with the party of protection, progress and prosperity. Hie announcement is as follows:
Announcement. We have from time to time, been asked to what school our political faith belonged by our readers and frleads, Ve will now endeavor to answer and give a few of our reasons. The “Reporter" is not and will not be rabid in any sense, as it is purely a local county newspaper, fostered by the whole people of Newton County, its columns are open to all alike. Oar principles hitherto, have been Democratic, b«t henceforth with all due respect for other parties, we expect to stand in the Republican ranks. Democratic doctrine is good enough theoretically speaking, and sounds pleasing to the eftr, but has been thoroughJydemonstrated to be impracticable. The principle of Free Trade, I believe to be’a national born trait in mankind, “to buy where you can bay the cheapest,” is what I mean and is practiced universally by men, individually of all nations, yet under the present condition of govermental affairs, here in the United States, with an immense honest and freedom bought debt, I believe firmly and honestly, that a protective tariff to be a good and necessary system, for the redncof same, and operating the municipal affairs of our land. A retrospective view of the history of our nation, is convincing to the unbiased mind, of the impracticability of Democratic measures, and also of the practicability of Republican rule. I am first, last and at all times, an American citizen, and believe entirely in the rule of America, by Americans, and careful investigation, discloses the fact, that the Democratic party contains the large majority of the foreign element, those who are inclined to to want the Church and State united. I am extremely opposed to any church, sect or creed, dictating to, or swaying an entire party. There are other reasons, but let these already mentioned, suffice for the present.
