THE CIRCUIT COURT.
Court adjourned over from last Thursday night until Monday. This week Judge Wiley is still residing, with the pettit jnry in attendance. Wm. Stephenson, of Rensselaer, was tried Monday, for pettit larceny: bfcing charged with “faking” an arm. I load of firgwood. The jury brought in a yerdidt of not guilty. The notorious Sherman Cooper was again before the court, the charge being fighting. Sherman plead guilty and was fined 85 and costs. , The celebrated hotel hack case of Sanders vs Zea, appealed from justice’s court,was settled by parties and dismissed. Each side paid his own costs, and Mr. Sanders retains possession of the hack. The fog-horn voice with which Lyman used to solicit custom for the Nowels House, is still in his possession. Mrs. Sabina M. Richards was given a divorce from ShSfman S. Richards the latter being the defendant in the criminal assault case, tried Tuesday. They were married Dec. 6, 1888, and separated Aug. 7,1895. She charged cruel and inhuman treatment; in that defendant used towards her the vilest and most abusive language; accused her of unchaste conduct, and afterwards struck and kicked her. She was given a divorce, the custody of their one child, a 4 year old boy, the household goods, and the restoration of her maiden name, Peterson. The old case of Sherman Richards, accused of critninial assail upon lola Richison, a girl under 14 years of age, was tried Tuesday. The case went to the jury about 4 P. M., and about 20 minutes later they brought in a verdict of “not guilty.” J. F. Iliff was tried by a jury, on the charge of giving liquor to a minor. Only 10 minutes was taken by the jury tp agree upon a verdict of “not guilty” in that case, Harry Gifford, foreman of the Gifford ranch, was tried for assault and battery. He also was acquitted. The grand jury was still in session up to the time we went to press.
