STRIKE IS SETTLED.
Philadelphia’s FtreetCar Trouble Han Been Adjusted. The great trolley strike in Philadelphia is ended, John Wamimnker is the mu who brought about the settlement, suc'ceeding Where ail others failed. He was aided in the work by members of thn j Christian League. The basis of settle- ’ ment follows: I First—While the Union Traction Company will only treat with the workmen ia Its employ, it will allow them membership in any lawful organization; second, it will take up all grievances and giv« them full and fair consideration; third, it will, so far as it has vacant places, immediately put on the old men, and as fast as vacancies arise will give preference to the old men yet unemployed, and endeavor jo arrange the trips of the ear? to favor the old men asufar as possible .without violating its contracts with the new men. The questions of compensation and hours are left for future determination. The battle has mainly been fought ’on the question of the employes’ membership in the Amalgamated Association of i Street Railway Employes, which the com-1 pany has persistently refused to reeognizo. ] The new since the strike began number nearly 1,000.
