Will Enforce Law Against Cuba. “Spain has been setting up the clai::i that the United States Government is inimical to her interests in-Cuba,” remarked Assistant Secretary Rockhill of the State Department, “but the recent action of this government in regard to the alleged filibustering .expedition at ‘ Wilmington should be a sufficient denial of-such an assertion on the part of the Spanish authorities. No matter what the feeling of the people may be in this country regarding the controversy between Spain and Cuba, one thing is certain, the laws on the statute books will be enforced by the State Department. That is all we can do in the matter, and protests by ministers or representatives of belligerents will not have any weight in altering the policy of the administration, which isthe enforcement of lav/.” *, - ' Extensive Forgery of Warrants. A profound sensation was caused in Butte, Mont., by the issuance, at the instance of the County Attorney, of warrants for the arrest of several men in high standing and connected with the last city administration, charging them with the forgery of city warrants on different funds. The suicide of ex-Treas-urey Jacobs several months ago, who was short about $50,000 in his accounts, resulted in an investigation, out of which the present disclosures grew. It is claimed there was a conspiracy, in which many officials were involved, and that fictitious warrants were drawn and cashed aggregating many thousand dollars, the prosecuting officers claiming it will amount from $20,000 to SIOO,OOO. Trade Grows Better. R. G. Dun & Co.’s Weekly Review of Trade says: “There is no real reaction in business. Gains which were recognized as temporary are vanishing, but there reat date, although prices average 8.8 per cent, lower than a year ago. It needs no keen observer to see that the reaction against rapid advance of prices is strong. The general tendency to curtail purchases where prices have notably advanced grows clearer in boots and shoes, in wool and in some products of iron.” Murders Two and Shoots Himself. James Ward, living near Hymera, Ind., induced his father-in-law, John Hunter, to go coon-hunting and murdered him. Ward returned to the Hunter house and called Hunter's son, a boy of 15 years, out of bed, and killed him. He then threatened to kill the boy’s sister, but instead shot himself in the neck, inflicting a mortal wound. The tragedy is supposed to be the, result of a family feud. It is said that Ward has twice beon an inmate in an asylum. v — ■ Spanish Government Backs Down* The State Department received a cable- . grana..f rom. C.onsuL-General. Williams at . Havana stating .that Aguirra had .been released by the Spanish authorities and" Sanguilly would be granted a civil trial soon. This was welcome news to the department, as the case of these two. United States citizens imprisoned in Cuba has dragged tediously for months. The release of Aguirra and the prompt trial of Sanguilly will secure everything for which the United States has contended.
