On the first three business days of September the Treasury Department sent internal revenue stamps to the various districts amounting to $8,630,000, which Igruceepted as an indication that the re-' ceipts from this source of revenue will be unusually heavy during the present month. About $5,675,000 of the stamps were for tax paid on spirits, and over four-fifths of this amount went to the Illinois districts, where the trust goods are manufactured. The shipment of beer stamps is the heaviest in the history of the bureau. ' The public debt statement shows the public debt on the last day of August, less cash in the treasury, to have been $942,924,323, an increase for the month of $2,815,418. Following is a recapitulation of the debt: Interest bearing debt $747,360,610 . Debt .on which interest baa - ceased -since maturity v. —1,095,870 Debt bearing no interest. . 377,906,998 Total $1,120,903,478 There are also certificates and treasury notes outstanding, offset by an equal amount of cash in the treasury, amount* mg to $602,384,693. The cash in the treasury is classified as follows: Gold $149,410,920 Silver 511,447,344 Paper 150,284,534 Bonds, disbursing officers’ _ balances, etc 15,817,539 Total $820,960,34.3 Agaiust 'the above total there are demand liabilities amounting to $042,921,189, leaving a cash balance of $184,039,156. The decrease in the cash for the month was $3,110,374. The Department of Agriculture has received from its agent at Berlin a statement of the imports of agricultural and other products into Germany. It shows that during the first six months of 1895 the following percentages of the total imports of the German Empire of the articles specified were obtained from the United States: Cotton, SO per cent.; wheat, 15; maize, 56; grass and timothy seed, 16; dressed beef, 59; oil cake, 33, and lard laneliu, 93. Accompanying the statement are copies of the quarantine and prohibition regulations now in force im the German Empire in regard to the importation of live stock (whether for import or transit only) and fresh meat. These regulations are of importance in-view of the stringent measures governing imports-' tions from this country. The importation of cattle and fresh beef is prohibited. The provincial presidents, of the German Government may order horses and sheep imported from the United States to be held at the landing place for observation and inspection. Fork imported from the United States must be accompanied by a Government certificate of inspection. Russia —The importation of cattle, sheep, hogs and goats, whether for cousumptioh or transit, is prohibited; also, fresh beef, mutton and goat meat.
