• Harry Bowden, a Pennsylvania operator,, was killed by tramps at Bucyrus, Ohio, and his body placed upon the tracks, where it was struck by an engine and decapitated. Bowden had received his monthly pay a few hours before the murder, and it is believed that the crime was committed for the purpose of robbery. The deceased was 25 years old and nnfharried. His parents reside in Crestline, where the remains will be taken for burial after the coroner has hehl an inquest. - At Syracuse, N. Y., Maj. T. L. Poole denied the report that Gen. Harrison had said, to Joseph I. Sayles and himself that he would under no circumstances be a candidate for the Presidency. Maj. Pbole said: “The report is made absolutely out of whole cloth. Mr. Harrison never spoke or even hinted at such a matter. The truth is that he did not speak upon the matter directly or indirectly. You cannot say too strongly that not one word was said by Mr. Harrison that could be construed into an allusion in any way to his position in regard to his possible candidacy for President.” The 25(Jth anniversary of the foundation of —M a lichee ter-by-the - Sea. —Mass,, - was celebrated Thursday. Crowds of people thronged the streets. The feature of the day was the representation of the landing of Governor Winthrop and party in 1G45. The ship Arabella was seen coming up the harbor and was greeted by a salute by the Waltham battery. Assembled at the landing place were 150 people dressed in Indian costume. Governor Winthrop was impersonated by R. H. Dana. The party was conducted to the arena, where the “pipe of peace” was smoked. A war dance followed! Maria Barberi, who murdered her lover, Domiuico Cataldo, at New York, because he abandoned her, was found guilty of murder in the first degree, and will, if the verdict is allowed to stand, be the first woman condemned to death since the passage of the law making electrocution the death penalty. The case will be taken to the Court of Appeals, and if that court does not order a new trial the Governor will be appealed to to commute the sentence to imprisonment. The Recorder’s charge was unfavorable to the defendant. He - said -in conclusion:—“You must exemplify justice by your verdict. A jury has nothing to do with mercy.. The law knows no distinction of persons. The law does not Gold woman less responsible than man. The female sex is sometimes used as a cloak for most horrible crimes.”
