NEWS NUGGETS.

The Eureka Tobacco Works at Washington operated by A. Beck & Co., Chicago, has been notified by the postoffice department to cease sending through the mails bags of smoking tobacco, or to remove from them certain cards that offer a prize to the purcha'ser of those containing a given number. The department holds that the scheme is practically a lottery. .Sigmund Frietsch & Co., Cincinnati pork packers, assigned to Moses Ruskin, who estimates the assets at SIIO,OOO and the liabilities at $58,000. Mr. Frietsch Bays the assignment is only a suspension, caused by the high price of hogs and the low price of lard. Among the creditors is the Merchants’ National Bank for $20,000. The firm has always had u favorable standing. The house of Trotter Holliday, a prominent rancher, who lived near Gridley, Cal., burned, and Holiday and his niece perished in the flames. Two hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars, the July interest on the bonds of the State of Tennessee, w’ere paid Monday. The State Treasury has on hand $023,000. * - .
