A GOOD YEAR FOR A BAD YEAR.
Since ’o' ibis many years The Re publican v has given at the close of each year a detailed summary of Rensselaer’s building operations for that year. This year the hard times have fiad so depi easing an effect that building operations have been comparatively small—so much so that we have hardly deemed it worth while to make the exhaustive inquiries necessary to a complete and accurate summary. ... Nevertheless, for so bad a year, Rensselaer has done very well in material growth, having built some 18 or 20 pretty fair buildings; rebuilt., or extensively repaired nearly as many more; and also done something in the business building, line. The dwelling houses range in cost from $2,500 down to a few hundred dollars; but the most of them are pretty good dwellings, and the average cost of all would probably be fully SI,OOO. Among the builders of new residences, we may name the following: B. F. Ferguson, Cullen street. Mrs. Anna Tuteur, Division street. - Felix French, Cullen street. McColly Bros., two on Van Rensselaer street.
B. D. McColly, on Vine street. Lewis D <y, Culien street. Mrs. Jas' Kays, Elm street. Jim Fisher, Elm street. McColly Bros., four on Vine street. Theodore Smith, Leopold’s addition.
I. J. Porter. Kannal street D. M. Hollister, Harrison street. W. W. Wishard, Westen’s addition. J. J. Brenner, Magee <fc Benjamin’s addition. Among those who haye rebuilt, largely repaired, or added to their residences may be mentioned. W. A; Millet, Jas. Fiynn, Dr Stockwell, Mrs. Sharp, Henry Mackey, E D. Rhoades, D. Hilton, and many others to a lesser extent... In the way of business building improvements, a second story on W.H. Eger’s hardware building; a new operat ng room at Miss Bartoo’s photograph gallery, and a small business room by Ellis & Murray, are the most important, on Washington street.
Near the railroad there has also been considerable activity. Including a new elevator by C. W. Coen; a hay barn by S. R. Nichols, cern cribs, galore, by all the giain dealers, &c., <fcc. -
Just west of the corporation, Chas. Battleday, has put up a good residence. Not far out, to the northwest, James Matheson, has built a fine house. Over south, a few miles, C- C. Brown has also built a right good residence. But the finest farm residence of the year, was built by M. B. Halstead, in Newton tp. It is one of the best country residences in the county. In this connection, although not a building improvement, still the new gravel roads, built by Marion Town, ship and Rensselaer ought to be mentioned. They radiate from Rensselaer towards the four principal points of the compass, are 17| miles long; and cost all things included, reckoning contract price, all expenses, new bridges Ac., not less than $45,000
