Foreign commercial travelers in Russia, besides paying a tax, must henceforth be provided with properly attested papers of identification; their passports must state the limit of time of their permission to travel in the empire, and must distinctly tell the religious profession of the traveler. Tt is said that the Lombardy poplars which opce grew so plentifully in the villages along the St. Lawrence and were planted by the French settlers who found in them reminders of their home across the sea, are disappearing. Carelessness in cutting down the female trees is the alleged cause. There is one office in Michigan which is a good deal of a sinecure. It is that of the .probate judge of Manitou county. The present judge has held the office for six years, and during all that time had but one case before him. As his salary is S2O(- a year, that one case has paid him $1,200. An exploror in central Africa has recently reported a curious fact in natural history. The cattle there have all been eaten up, lions and leopards have taken to man-hunting, . and have changed their habits in consequence. Instead of roaring on the trail, as is their custom, they do not, utter a sound.
