GILLAM ITEMS.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Buskirk were made happy by the arrival of a fine girl last Wednesday. R. L. V. Massey took in the Populist meeting ac Rensselaer last Saturday. A. W. Prevo and Michael Robinson went down in the southwestern part of the state on business last week. There was quite a fire in Gifford’s big marsh last week, it burned about 400 tons of hay for Frank Dunn, besides burning smaller amounts for other parties. Some of the hands who were working in the hay field bad a rather exciting time, the fire came upon them so rapidly they were obliged to leave their hay-slides and other implements and run for the woods in order to keep grom being burned to death. George Dunn is putting up a hou e on his farm near the West Vernon school bomse. Jes“e Gwin, Republican candidate for treasurer, was looking after his interests in Giilam last week.
Quite a number of the Gillam people went to Rensselaer last Tuesday to hear Mr. Nelson speak and also to see the balloon go up with the billy goats for passengers. Mr. Hathorn, the Populist candidate for Congress, spoke at Center school house, last Thursday night, to quite a large audience. He is an eloquent speaker but nevertheless he will misrepresent the facts just the same. Mr. McCoy the wide awake Republican, spoke to quite a large audience at Center school house, last Tuesday night, he was assisted by John E. Alter and Wiley, both of whom emphasiz.-cl Mr. McCoy’s speech by a few pointed remarks on the tariff question. Mr. McFarland, the Dem-Pop candidate for clerk was in Giil&m last Thursday. Mr. Samuel Keeslin died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Nash, last Thursday night, aged 70 years. He had been sick for quite a while of catarrhal trouble.
Too late for last week. John Hanley and wife, of Lafayette, visited friends in Gillam last week. Samuel Keeslin is very sick at the home of his sister, Mrs. Nash. His recovery is very doubtful John Schultz baS removed his sawmill from Andrew Fans’ farm, to B. J. Gifford's ranch in Barkley township. Mr. Tabor and wife, of Keener tp., were the guests of Michael Robinson and family, last Saturday and Sunday. Comer Bros., are running their saw-mill day and night in order to supply Gifford with lumber for building purposes.
Quite a number of the Gillam people funeral of the venerable Jesse Wifcox, at Dew Drop Chapel, last Monday. Calvin Coppess went to Rensselaer last Monday, as a grand juror for the October term of court.
Frank Faris, who is attending school in Valparaiso, visited friends in Gillam the latter part of the week. The Republican meeting held at
East Vernon schcol house, last Saturday night by Phares and Thompson was very largely attended, which is a very good sign that the Republicans of Giilam are wide awake. J. W. Conrad is back in Giilam, visiting friends, this week. Rilla Osborne spent last Saturday and Sunday in Giilam. « Chas. Massey came up from Francesville, last Saturday, where he is attending school, and spent Sunday with his many friends. Chas. Guild, Gillam's bustling real estate agent has been on the sick list for the past week, but is able to be at work again. Ollie Querry, daughter of John Querry, of Hildreth, Illinois, former ly of Giilam, died at the home of her father, Oct. 9 th, ’94, of typho malarial fever, aged 12 years. The remains were brought to GUlam for burial. The funeral services were held in Independence Chapel conducted by Revs. Sebring and Sawyer, of Medaryville. The remains were placed in Independence cemetery by the side of those of her mother.
