Crumpacker J..... 73 Spangler. 12 Dr. Hatch, the newly nominated candidate, is a clean, honorable and upright gentleman, and one who stands especially high in his own community. In both personality and locality he is admirably calculated to harmonize all divergent elements in the party, in this district.
The Republican goes to press a few hours later than usual this week, we having waited to obtain the result of the Logansport convention. Herbert Hess, son of Ex-Sheriff Hess,~~Of Indianapolis, committed suicide in Chicago, last Saturday, by shooting. He had lately lost his wife and infant child and it is supposed that dispondency over the loss caused him to commit the act. The unfortunate young man was a grandson of the late Dr. James Ritchey, of this place, and was consequently the nephew of Mrs. D. M. Nelson, Mrs. J. W. Paxton, and of Miss Ella Ritchey. He was a young man of fine promise and good prospects, and his parents’ only child. Marriage licenses issued since last reported:

The annual catalogues of the Rens selaer public schools are now printed and ready for distribution. All patrons of the school should obtain a copy, and they may be had by calling upon E. L. Clark, at the auditor’s office, or on M. F. Chilcote, at his law office. People who are looking for a good place to move to, to educate their children; or to send the older ones for a h’gh school course, should send for one of the catalogues. With our two splendid modern brick and stone school buildings; our fine corps of thirteen trained teachers; our progressive, liberal and experienced School Board; our immense library and fine philosophical apparatus, we can say, without boasting, that no better public schools can be found in the state, than we have right here in Rensselaer. While for a pleasant, healthy, moral and sociable town to live in, Rensselaer is clear ahead of everything. •
Andrew Hicks, from just over the line in White Co., from Carpenter tp., was in town Monday. Crops are fine in his locality. His . oats went 45 bushels to the acre, machine measure. But they were white oats, and the yield of black oats is much larger this year. His neighbor Thornt Dobbins, in Carpenter tp., got 65 bushels, machine measure, or nearly 75 bushels, by weight to the acre.
The Iroquois Gun Club is now preparing for a big two days shooting tonmament, to be held on or about Sept 7th and Btb. A district or inter-county medal, for some 7 or 8 counties, will be one of the prizes. It is also likely that many special prizes will be offered by Rensselaer merchants, after the manner of the business men of Lafayette and other places where shooting clubs live and move and have their shooting tournaments.
The death of Mrs. Mary Batea briefly mentioned last week, occured August 13th, at her home in Carroll county. Her age was 76 years. Her husband, who survives her, is 81 years old. She also leaves five sons and one daughter, one of the former being Ex-Postmaster N. S. Bates, of Rensselaer. All of the children were at the funeral, except one son, who lives in Dakota.
