Mrs. Cooper will give a Phantom Party next Friday evening, in honor ot her ndee, Miss Helen Cross. We hear that Mr. and Mrs. G.'W. Hieleg. of Waukegan, are rejoicing in the possession of a new boy, since July 27. A numb r of our people went to Goodland last week to attend tne lectures and concert there. The Misses Haw kins gave an “At Home” last Tuesday evening in honor of their friends the Misses Holmes and Sheetz. Miss Olla Hendricks attended institute at Goodland last week. She pronounces the institute a most instructive and interesting session. Gypsy Campa abounded last week. One at the Fair Ground and one at the M. E. Church. The one at the M. E. church was in the interest of the Willing Workers, and we believe was A financial as well as a social
success. Grandma Vannatta of Rensselaer, visited in town a few days last week. Visitors out of town —Grace Thompson, at Valparaiso, Maud Bowman at Chicago, Alice Jones and Carrie McKee at Niagara Falls and Chatauqua, Mrs. Baltbis at Roann. In town —Miss Agnes Nelson and Isabelle White of Chicago, Frank P. Ramsey, of Hanover at the Dr’s., Miss Rose Holings worth at Mr. Tharp’s, Mrs. Will Hollingsworth at J. G. Morris.’ Frank Trainor, who used to live about three miles south of town, was killed by the cars near Chicago last Friday. How the accident happened is not known to us, but the body was badly mangled. The funeral took place from the Caatholicchurch Monday. Mr. Trainor was well known in this vicinity having lived here a number of years, and having Jmarried here. Mrs. McCulley is still quite sick. Her son Bert is her to visit her. H. H. Walker was in Monticello jsst week Wednesday and Thursday.
GILLAM ITEMS.
Roads are getting dusty again. Prospects very flattering for a big crop of corn. The threshing machine has begun its annual buzz. The wheat and oats crop is the largest Gitlam has had for- several years. Haying is about completed, the yield is very light. Trustee Robinson went to Rensselaer on Monday, to make his annual settlement with the commissioners and county superintendent. Frank Harris is back from the west. Gerome Massey has sold his interest in the DeMotte livery barn to Ben Hardesty, of Medaryville.
Thomas Robinson and wife visited friends in San Pierre, over Sunday. Mrs. Hamilton and daughter Myrtie, of Morocco, are visiting friends in Gillam. Adam Coppess is still in a very critical condition. He has taken no nourishment except water, for three weeks. . There will be a lawn social given in McCollough’s grove, by the Epworth League, on Saturday evening, August 11,’for the benefit of the Independence church. All are invited to come and have a good time. The ground will be cleared and croquet sets furnished so everybody can enjoy themselves, after which a generous supply of ice - cream and cake will be furnished.
